Outdoor track to be better? by STEVE SINCLAIR Assistant Sport Editor Nebraska's performance in the Big Eight indoor track meet was disappointing, but Husker assitant coach Daan Brittenham believes things will be better outdoors. THE MUSKERS managed only fourth behind champion Kansas, Kansas State, and Missouri after going undefeated in uic uuii seasuii. Brittenham said that sprinter Don Quarrie, and hurdlers Randy Butts and Gary Gressett will be strong er In the longer outdoor races. He added that the triple Jump, javelin, and intermed iate hurdles will be strong points outdoors. Quarrie finished third in the 60 at Kansas City, but Butts and Gressett failed to qualify for the finals. HE ADDED that the tri ple jump with Hopeton Gor don, the javelin with Ed Mc Pherron, and the intermed iate hurdles with Wes Leon- Garth Case ard, Leighton Priestley, and John Mottley would also be strong points outdoors. "We thought we would do better," Brittenham said, "but the competition is tough in a meet like that." "Most of the guys we were counting on are freshmen," he added. The biggest surprises were the Huskers' performances in the 600 and the mile relay, according to Brittenham. THE HUSKERS grabbed three places in the 600. with sophomore Garth Case winnng for the second straight year. Bob Pierce was fourth and Leonard finished fifth. 'The Huskers' championship mile relay quartet of Pierce, Ron Lange, Priestley, and Case finished only three tenths of a second short of the school record at 3:17.7. THE OTHER Husker finishers included: 60-yard dash Horace Levy, fifth, 880 Dan Morran, fourth, two-mile run Mel Campbell, third, pole vault Duane Sullivan, fifth, long jump Gordon, third; Eric Heeter, fifth. i On The Track M yard high hurdles 1, Ltd William.
