    Nixon likes prof's idea
A new cabinet-level agency
to accelerate the improvement
of rural life in the United States
began as the idea of a
University of Nebraska
agricultural economist.
The Rural Affairs Council,
which President Richard M.
Nixon established by executive
order recently, was conceived

Ag majors: new minors
College of Agriculture majors
can now earn minors from any
department in the College of
Arts and Sciences.
Any ag student who already
has 20 or more hours in Arts
and Sciences is eligible for this
program according to Frank E.
Eldridge, associate dean of the
College of Agriculture.
Eldridge said "some test
cases must be run through
before we can determine the
exact requirements needed for

fairs Council," Peterson said,
"is to discuss problems such as
rural-urban migration and to
recommend programs and
legislation to serve the in
terests of people living outside
major metropolitan areas."
The council, Peterson con
tinued, would also serve a
watchdog function. All major
national policies concerned
with health, education and
welfare would be analyzed
from the rural dweller's point
of view.
He added that the council

might suggest modifications in
the analyzed policy to better fit
the interests of the more
sparsely populated areas.
Peterson first conceived the
idea in early 1969. He said at
that time that rural citizens
deserved more concern.
The council is now in opera
tion, although an executive
director has not been appointed.
