Treves' work is part of a study being conducted by the National Science Foundation. It was his fifth and final trip to the Antarctic. He hopes to have a report of his findings finished by the end of the summer. Erebus, the only active volcano in the An tarctic. "The volcano gives off a steam, and there is some sulfur lying around, but that's about the extent of its activity," Treves said. ' Treves won't complete the analysis of his work until sum mer. He plans to write a thesis about his trips to the Antarctic. "A vast amount of informa tion has been gathered in the last two decades by studying in the Antarctic," Treves said. All of the information is available to scientists from all nations in a system of interna tional cooperation which Treves calls "unbelievable." Scientists from the United States, Russia and many other countries work in the Antarctic. Their cooperation extends to even taking turns delivering the mail for each other. LIFE IN the Antarctic isn't the same as in Lincoln, but Treves had little trouble ad justing. " . "The weather can always cause problems but on this trip it was rather mild," the geologist said. "It was pro bably better than in Lincoln, sometimes warmer, but oc casionally cooler." Another unusual aspect of Antarctic life is that no plants exist, Treves said. And of course, the days .are 24 hours long in the summer. Trevis said that he didn't have any trouble sleeping in the daylight. "If you work hard enough, you don't have any trouble sleeping." One of the advantages of continuous daylight is if there is bad weather one day and it is impossible to work, you can work that much longer the next day, he said. "This was the first year that any women have been down in Antarctica," Trevis said. "They were grateful for the chance to work on the conti nent." Treves admitted that it Is good to be back in North America, but he would like to return to Antarctica someday for further study. Like all travelers returning from a long trip, he has his share of souvenirs. But his are a little unusual he brought back several hundred pounds of volcanic rock.
