Omaha The NU Board of Regents Monday approved
the sale of a 228-acre tract in Ilavelock to the city of Lincoln
for development of a park and golf course.
The price of the land, arrived at by three independent
appraisals, was $325,000. The Havelock farm property has been
used for years for agricultural experimental work which is
now being transferred to the Agricultural Field Laboratory
at Mead. The remaining 1100 acres of the tract will be phased
out later.
THE REGENTS also dedicated to the city a portion of the
northwest corner of 17th and Vine to be used for a right
turn bypass from 17th Street onto Vine Street. Traffic studies
indicate that this improvement would relieve traffic congestion.
Also approved was a recommendation by the University
Graduate Council that the Department of Mathematics in Lincoln
be authorized to offer programs of study leading to the degrees
Master of Arts for Teachers and Master of Science for
Teachers.
THESE DEGREES allow teachers to Improve their training
in the subject they teach. The degrees were requested by
the math department on the premise that many teachers need
and want more training.
Expenditures up to $160,000 for re-modeling Lincoln dorms
was authorized by the Regents. Part of Selleck Quadrangle
will be remodeled first.
Gary D. Hansen was named by the Regents as chairman
and associate professor of the Department of Family Economics
and Management effective July 1. He fills the vacancy created
by the retirement of Arnold Barager. Hansen is currently
associate professor of sociology at Portland State College,
