casting of the four-day run of
performances.
Soprano Sue Ware's
portrayal of Santuzza . is
outstanding. Her stage manner
and movement are unaffected.
Her diction is good. Her voice
has a clear beauty and the
power to soar above orchestra
and chorus when necessary.
She presents a rare treat for
the opera audience: beauty and
coherence of performance in an
attractive stage figure. Sandra
Utsumi and Jeanie Dietrich are
also notable as Santuzza.
IT IS impossible to list all
performers of merit. Among
the more notable performers
are: Rick Brandt, Gary Lamb
and Raymond Miller as Turid
du; and Wanda Nelson as
Lucia.
John Zei's staging direction
does not stifle or constrict the
vocal performer. In viewing
opera one must never forget

that the human voice, with its
beauty and power of ex
pression, is the primary con
cern of opera. It is to Zei's
credit that a -musically sound
production is visually coherent,
especially in light of the
unusual set on which he
directed.
Several numbers involving
chorus, however, contain static
moments. In all other produc
tions of this opera I've seen,
dance has filled these moments
beautifully. This week's pro
duction contains no dance, but
relies, solely on musical beauty
to entertain in such spots.
Performances are Feb. 4-6
at 8:00 p.m. and Feb. 7 at 2:00
and 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $1.75
and subject to advance sale;
they may be obtained in the

Ya gotta have a gimmick
'Downhill Racer9
"Downhill Racer" Is a film
that would be far better as a
skiing documentary or a
travelogue rather than as a
movie with any pretense of
social importance.
The skiing photography and
sound in "Racer" are ex
cellent. J. J. Jalbert as Robert
Redford's double provides
some thrilling moments the
best in .the film rocketing
down the slopes with a camera
strapped somewhere on his
body. Jalbert is so good that
perhaps Redford should be
called his double.
REDFORD PLAYS sort of an
inarticulate Ron Patimkin
("Goodbye Columbus") if you
can believe that. He plays a ski
bum a la Keir Dullea ("De
Sade") whose greatest display
of emotion is blowing the horn
on Camilla Sparv's Porsche.
A scene with his father back
home in Idaho Springs, Col
orado, takes place "in 25 words
or less" and Is probably in
tended to indict Daddy and
show Robbie as a victim of his
environment (or lack of it). But
Redford's autism goes on so
long and becomes so irritating
that you begin to blame the
director.
WITH CAMILLA SPARV and
skiing, the film has plenty of
potential. Unfortunately, the
two are balanced they would
have done better to show much
more of Camilla or far more
skiing.
As a serious statement of any
theme, "Downhill Racer"
misses the first turn and does a
double "Christie" off a cliff.
However, it may be the only
way we'll ever win a gold
medal for skiing in the Olympics.
