But Nebraska's basketball
team needed more than 8,603
Coliseum fans Tue ay night to
upset the nation's fifth-ranked
college team, Duquesne, 82-77.
Take, for instance, Marv'n
Stewart, the Neb'fcska guard
who didn't even start the game.
He watched, for Use most part,
as the Huskers constructed a
44-26 halftime bulge against a
team that had averaged 112
points in three wins.
With the heavily favored
Dukes methodical'" slicing ths
first half cushion. Stewart mora
than made his presence felt in
depositing IS second half points
in an 18-point night.
At one point in the gam,
Stewart gave the s oreboard a
casual glance. The Duquesna
defender decided to do the
same thing, and Marv fired
around him for an easy layup
in the final three minutes.
Other baskets, however, did
not come so easy for the
Huskers in the second half. The
Dukes, with a revampel
defense and a revitalized of
fense, almost recovued in time
behind the deadly outside
shooting of sophomore Mickey
Davis.
Davis' belated tesrue efforts
accounted for 15 second half
points. In fact, Duquesne's 51
noint production after in
termission was neutralized hy
the fact that Nemaska center
Leroy Chalk kept himself in the
rebound scuffle.
The Huskers, suffering from
a severe height ciradvantage,
outrebounded the Pukes, 38-35
as Chalk retrieved 11 stray
shots to pace the effort.
Nebraska also hit at a .538
field goal pace (23-52), although
being outscored fn n; the field
by 10 points. The Huskers' 26-35
performance at the free thro
line accounted for the dif
ference. Duquesne coach John "Red"
Manning credited the Huskers
with a top team effort and ad
ded that it was tou?h for other
teams to play Nebiaska on the
road.
Manning said Chalk was the
big surprise.
The Big Sandy, 1 ex., junior's
talent should no have gone
underestimated. The leading
percentage shooter in the Big
Eight Conference last year
Chalk contributed 17 points to
the upset, including a 7-12 ef
fort from the field.
Other Nebraska field goal
percentages were equally im
pressive. Stewart (612), Tom
Scantlebury (5 9). sophomore
Al Nissen (5-7) and senior Bob
Gratopp (2-4) also hit over .300.

maining to play, is expected to
play Friday night when the
Huskers tackle another nationally-ranked
team. Houston,
in the first round of the 4-team
Bluebonnet Classic.
Riuioff planned
in legs match
Four males have been
selected as finalists for
"H.L.O.C." the Hairiest Legs
on Campus contest sponsored
by the Builders Foundation
Committee.
Candidates were interviewed
and rated according to beauty
of their legs, muscle tone, fit
ness routine, and amount of
hair growth.
H.L.O.C. will be chosen by
a campus-wide election. Pho
tos of the four contestants
will be displayed in the voting
booths in the Nebraska Union,
Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to
3:30 p.m. A minimal charge for
each vote will be made.
The H.L.O.C. contest is a
publicity stunt for the Builders
Foundation Committee. Last
year Miss Jayne Andrews was
selected as "Miss Ideal
Foundation."

The 1969 football season
was a rewarding one for
everyone associated with the
Nebraska football team, in
cluding Joe Orduna.
Orduna was disappointed
about not getting to play this
fall because of a pre-season
Injury, but he didn't sit around
all fall feeling sorry for
himself.
Instead, the versatile
Omahan spent most of his time
doing the other thing he enjoys
most in life.
"I spent most of my time
working with high school kids
for an organization called
Young Life," Orduna said.
His work included from one
to four speaking engagements a
week to different groups across
the state.
"The purpose of the
organization is to present to
kids another alternative in life,
namely, Jesus Christ," Orduna
said. "This is the main reason I
didn't miss playing football
much."
Orduna plans to continue his
work indefinitely. Future plans
include speaking at a church
service in California during
Christmas vacation.
For the last two weeks
Orduna has been taking time
out of each day for workouts to
strengthen the knee injured in
a scrimmage the week before
the Southern Cal game.
"I have been doing
everything possible to
strengthen my knee," he said.
"So far, the operation looks like

it was a success. My knee
should be stronger than it was
before I was hurt."
Orduna's leg was put in a
cast for five weeks. When the
cast was removed, the doctor
gave him a brace to wear for
six weeks.
"I didn't like the brace and
quit using it after two days,"
Orduna said. "I was on
crutches for three weeks, but I
got tired of using them, also."
A standout in both football
and track, Orduna couldn't
completely divorce himself
from football during the
season.
"The thing that bothered me
the most during the season was

seeing situations arise in which
I knew could do the job, but it
just wasn't possible to get in
there," he said.
Orduna indicated that he was
pleased with the .performance
of the team this year. He said
he knew the sophomore
quarterbacks would come
through, as well as his
replacement, Jeff Kinney.
"I thought Kinney was
slighted when he wasn't
selected as sophomore of the
year by UPI," he added.
Orduna made a name for
himself around the Big Eight in
1968 when he predicted the
Huskers would win the con
ference title and go undefeated.
Consequently, he isn't willing
td make any predictions on the
Sun Bowl. "I don't know
enough about Georgia to say
anything, but I do think we can
handle them," he said.
Orduna is more certain about
his future and was ready with a
prediction about next year's j
team.
"I should be ready for spring
practice," he said. He added
that he would like to
participate in track, but there
is some question as to whether
or not he would lose his football
eligibility if he competes in the
latter sport.
"There shouldn't be any
team in the country capable of
beating us next year," he said.
This statement might sound
too optimistic to some Husker
faithfuls considering the quality
of this year's doparting seniors
and next year's ambitious
schedule, but Orduna doesn't
agree. .
He cites the competition that
will exist for positions,
especially in the offensive
backfield, indicating that there
will be an abundance of quality
football players trying out for
each position.
Orduna said he isn't worried
about the defense even though
there will only be three
returning starters.
"The coaches always scrape
together an excellent defense,"
he said.
Orduna admits that he has
been contacted by a few pro
teams. "I have had to tell them
I won't be available next
year."
