PAGE 4 THE DAILY NEBRASKAN WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1969 Planning problems slow construction Progress of the expansion of the University of Nebraska campus has provided as many drawbacks as it has rewards. According to Carl Donaldson, the University business manager, vast problems are encountered with every face-lifting project. An engineering complex is now under construction which, when com pleted, will relieve crowded conditions in Ferguson, Richards and Stout Halls. A library addition which would more than double Love Library's present size and offer room for all its volumes under a single roof is in the planning stage. Hamilton Hall and the Social Science Building are soon to open their doors to students. Less known, however, are the crises involved with these and other projects. Foremost of these difficulties is the construction worker strike which occurred last spring and lasted well into the summer. As a result of the work stoppage, completion dates for many projects are still months away. Opening of Hamilton and the remodeled Social Science building, originally scheduled for the first of the semester, has been postponed until after Thanksgiving. Another summer project, the patio north of the Union, is finally getting under way. The in terior of Andrews Hall was only recently finished. Planning also creates headaches. Long-range expansion plans must be determined well in advance. "We have to anticipate for every conceivable possibility," said Donaldson. "There are trends we have to provide for." There is often opposition to such plans. Ne w complexes are either built on parking lot sites, which outrage student car-owners, or they are con structed at some remote end of the campus, which infuriate pedestrian students. The long-range architectural diagrams frequently ignore existing structures, especially fraternity and sorority houses. Independent plans are sometimes conflicting. The new mall north from 12th and R Streets will remain in complete until the proposed library addition Is completly done. A gap near Burnett Hall will remain to allow heavy construction trucks access to the new structure. The eason is practical, but an unfinished walk does provide a certain amount of In convenience. Money problem The biggest problem is, of course, money which is needed from the very inception of any project. Research for land sites, plans and drawings, and finally, actual development must be funded. Funds are not always avail able. Construction is more expensive to day. Donaldson noted, "It cost about $200,000 to build Richards Hall in 1912. WELCOME TO U of N 1 17 T7 y i i v r s i -r kAVItn 50O AL1OIJ50TO 8000 ILUOTT 8T WD HINO 78 FAIN HAVB.N 1100 W8.0DIN. Swedishfilm opens seriesl "Hugs and Kisses," the first of the,: Nebraska Union foreign film series.; will be shown at the Nebraska Then- tre, 1144 P Street, Wednesday at 7 and 9 p.m. Admission is by member ship only. The Swedish film presents a good,, reason for not inviting friends home: When kicked out of the house by hi; girl friend, would-be author John goe? home for dinner with an old friend. Max. Max's wife Eva at first resent? John's presence, but his good nature and bumbling attempts at domestic helpfulness win her into insisting thai he live with them. For the next few months all goe well, but John asks Hiekan, a typing instructress, to join th group so he can have a woman of his own. Max and Eva decide that Hickan must leave before John becomes too in dependent, and to that end, frame John into apparent faithlessness. The result is as they desired, but it back fires. According to a review by the "New Yorker" the film "bogs a bit at times but it is an ingratiating oft beat and perceptive comment on a couple of chic young smugs and an odd-ball friend with whom they form a household. Agneta Ekmanna, the fashion-model wile, is lovely, the en tire cast endearing, and the film as a whole stylish and satisfying."
