WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 1959 PAGE 4 THE DAILY NEBRASKAN Architecture school looks for director infaK:z:XcC:TM:-L ii i v, i reel j The University of Nebraska School of Architecture may not have a full time director until next July, but ac cording to Dr. Homer Puderbaugh, Its Interim director, the school should not' suffer in its accreditation status. "We are not on probation," CEP now off to good start Continued from page 1 the Centennial Course the students WIT construct their own Utopia. ,$ooks, it is planned, will become an important part of the Centennial College. The College has a library that is full with books, magazines, journals, and newspapers. The Nebraska Book Store helped start the library by donating 600 paperbacks. The CEP was made possible due to,'a $38,000 grant given to the University by the Woods Charitable Fund, of Lincoln and Chicago. However, the operation of the College will now be paid entirely by the University. 'Besides Beck and Knoll, of the Eng lish .department, the other two full time' teaching Fellows are Dr. Jerry Petr, economics instructor in the Col lege of Business Administration; and Dr. Philip Scribner, philosophy pro fessor. The Centennial College also has five part-time teaching Fellows. These in clude, Dr. Henry Ablin, an associate professor of electrical engineering; Dr. Thomas Helms, an entomologist in the College of Agriculture and Home Economics; Dr. Edward Homze, of the history department; Dr. Theodore Jorgensen, of the physics department; and Dr. Ransom Taylor, a specialist in German literature and language. Richard Johnson of the Smithsonian Institute will also teach in the CEP. Mrs. Sally Gordon will be the ex ecutive assistant to College. KFMQ broadcasts at downtoivn radio store Underground radio is coming out of biding Friday night as KFMQ FM presents its rock music show live from the World Radio Store In downtown Lincoln, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Store manager Kirk Davis reports that live- music by, the Genuine Yttrii will be featured as well as the staff from the radio station and their usual lection of progressive rock music. Pt'derbaugh said, "and we do not foresee any difficulty in retaining our accreditation. I think the school has a solid staff and a good reputation. Our main concern is a lack of decent facilities." Puderbaugh, who assumed direction of the school last spring when Dr. Merlin Hodgel resigned to take a dean's position at the University of Oklahoma, says a committee has been appointed to search for prospects to fill the position. "This does not mean," he said, "that we cannot recommend a person earlier than the start of the next fiscal year (July 1). It means that if the process is pursued well, it will pro bably take that long." Puderbaugh, who came from the University of Manitoba, Canada, in 1960, says the committee is looking for a director who has both a pro fessional and academic background. "He should have had at least five or ten years in private practice," he said. "He must also be reasonably well-versed academically." "I don't think we are looking for a strong leaader, however. We ' feel the faculty will make most of the decisions. It can best put together the package. The director must im plement that package," Puderbaugh said. "We don't feel a new director will be plunging into a mess here," he continued. "We feel he will be coming into a well-rounded program, one of the best, if not the best, in the Big Eight." Three faculty representatives and two professional Nebraska architects comprise the search committee, headed by Professor Gerald Anderson. Professors Robert Guenter and Phillip Cor kill are the' other faculty representatives. Bill Larsen, of an Omaha architectural firm, and Jim Strang, a Lincoln architect, also were appointed to the committee b y University President Dr. Joseph So shnk. Anderson, who came to Nebraska from a professional job in 1961 says, "There is no great rush to make a selection. We are in the process of soliciting names. Recommendations will come from many sources: alum nae, students, faculty, Nebraska architects and from other colleges and universities." "It's difficult to establish a set of criteria upon which to select a new director," the selection committee chairman said. "Qaullflcations apply somewhat differently in Individual cases." Anderson hinted that the school in several years hopes to become a col lege. This measure would have to pass the administration, the Board of Regents and the State legislature."
