If such is true, then University of Nebraska football followers are out of character. Husker fans saw chances of upset ting the University of Southern California evaporate Saturday, 31-21, but the setback spawned more op timism than disappointment. Trojan coach John McKay, manipulating a cigar in the locker room after the game, helped produce much of that optimism. "I know one thing," McKay said. "This was the first time in the last seven years that we have actually gotten tired, and I don't know whether the heat had anything to do with it or not." "Another thing," he continued. "If Nebraska played in our league (Pacific 8 Conference), it would do very well. I'm sure of that. It's sound defensively and proven it can score." Many of USC's standouts repeated McKay's favorable comments. "I knew their defense would be solid," all-America offensive tackle candidate Sid Smith said. "They were very quick, especially Murtaugh ( Jerry, NU's leading tackier with 16). I knew (Ken) Geddes would be tough. He gave me a couple of real good rips right in the throat." Defensive end Jimmy Gunn, another USC all-America candidate, was discouraged with his club's defensive effort, blaming the performance on "usual" first-game ineptitude. "Nebraska has a lot of potential."; he said. "It has a lot of good backs, but its line is not as quick.
