Assistant Sports Editor
Nebraska is idle this week
a it braces for the Kansas
showdown Oct. 12 while the
Jayhawks tune up for the
collision against an expected
weak New Mexico outfit
Saturday.
Dig Eight play kicks off its
conference campaign a s
upsui gent Iowa State,
operating on Coach Johnny
Majors' revitalized program,
entertains a somewhat
disappointing Colorado crew
at Ames.
Other Big, Eight action
sends Kansas State to
Virginia Tech and Oklahoma
State to Austin for an
engagement with ttie Texas
Longhorns. Missouri hosts
Army and Oklahoma has an
open date.
Taking a first crack at the
prognosticating game, I see:
COLORADO OVER IOWA
STATE The Cyclones have
tasted victory twice in three
games. That's two more than
they were predicted to win all
season. Mike Montler and
Mike Schnitker help put the
clamps on the surprise
package from Ames.
KANSAS OVER NEW
MEXICO - Ever get the
feeling the Jayhawks are out
to show people something this
season? Don Shanklin takes a
breather Saturday, saving

KANSAS STATE OVER
VIRGINIA TECH - Virginia
Tech impressed by chasing
Alabama to the wire in its
opener. But K-State's Cor
nelius Davis and Dave Jones
cut loose to bury the Gobblers
in a mild upset.
TEXAS OVER OKLAHOMA
STATE Step aside
Cowboys, it's the Longhorns
turn to do the branding. But
don't expect as big a bulge as
last year's 19-0 score.
MISSOURI OVER ARMY -The
Tigers retaliated
against Illinois last week after
absorbing a 12-6 setback to
Kentucky in their opener.
Coach Dan Devine is one guy
who just doesn't care to Jose.
WISCONSIN OVER
MICHIGAN STATE -Wisconsin
has not won a
game since 1966. The un
beaten Spartans loom a
potential surprise in the Big
Ten. That's why Badger
coach John Coatto figures it's
a good time to start winning.
INDIANA OVER JLLINOIS
Kansas socked it to both
Big Ten foes. Missouri did no
less against Illinois. Indiana's
beating wasn't quite so bad
and besides, John Isenbargar
is healthy again. He doesn't
like to punt.
PURDUE OVER
NORTHWESTERN This
appears to be a pushover for
Keyes' companions, but look
for a pesky scrap from the
Wildcats at Evanston. Trou
ble is, Le Roy doesn't much
care where he is. When it
comes to touchdowns, he is
not choosy.
PENN STATE OVER
WEST VIRGINIA - The Nit-
tany Lions, installed as a top
pre-season choice in the na
tional polls, have lived up to
expectations. Now is certainly
no time for a letdown.
NOTRE DAME OVER
IOWA If only Ed Podolak
were up to par. But even that
probably would not turn the
trick. The Irish are on the
rebound. Coach Ara
Parseghian has not been
known to keep the points
down.
UCLA OVER 'SYRACUSE
The Bruins travel cross
country to play this one. And
that is just what they will do
when they take the field,
cross some more country.
