'i - It UP AND OVER . . . Chuck Rogers shows the form which made him the Big Eight's first 17-foot pole vaulter. But the muscular Colorado star had his problems at Memorial Stadium Saturday along with others winning with just a 14-6 leap. Story at right photo by Du Ladley by George Kaufman Sports Editor Clifton Forbes was a dia mond in the rough Saturday afternoon at Memorial Sta dium, as the Husker track team took a disappointingly easy 82-63 win from Colora do's Buffaloes. The swift Jamaican claim ed the sprints in 9,9 and 20.9, team and had the track to him self in the final leg of a win ning 3: 14.3 mile relay. Dropped baton In the mile relay the traditional curtain event Forbes had a slight lead on the final exchange when the CU runners dropped the ba ton and walked off the track, leaving Clifton a sort of "vic tory lap" finale. Apart from Forbes' great day, however, there was real ly very little for the only home crowd of the year to get excited about among the headliners expected to spice the performance. Colorado's premium pole vaulter Chuck Rogers the Big Eight's only 17-footer and Nebraska's Lennox Bur gher who owns an NCAA second-best of 52-11 and work ing on 54 both won their events, but were not up to par. Rogers went 14-6, then . mad at himself kept vault I inff after the event was over. trying to his his motion; but he soon retired to the stands thoroughly piqued. 'I was terrible' "I just couldn't rock back on the pole right," the vault er said, "It just wouldn't fall into place ... I was terri ble." He was short of his own meet record of 15-0. Burgher won his event in 49-6, but that didn't even en danger the meet record of 49-10 by Victor Brooks in 1963. NU's league-leading high jumper Steve Krebs set one of the four meet records at 6-SVi, but this was far below his Big Eight high of 6-10y4li and his target of 7-0. . In other record-setting per formances were Dave Ku dron's 52.8 440 hurdles win; Dan Moran's 1:51.7 half-mile winner for NU; and CU's Craig Runyan's 14:04.8 three mile, hacking almost a min ute off Larry Toothaker's 15:03.2 1964 mark. Team mate Rick Trujillo, who is a gold miner, when he's not at tending s c h 0 0 1 at Boulder, chased him in to also crack the record with a 14:07.5.
