Conference champs Kansas State Wildcats had to stall the final two minutes at Manhat tan Saturday night to cap a comeback win which handed Tex Winter's club its eighth crown in 15 years. The Wildcats finished 11-3 to- emerge from the dust of one of the most fantastic Big Eight scrambles ever with an undisputed crown, which many people thought no team would be able to do t h r e e weeks ago. The hapless Cowboys clos ed a cellar-sharing season at 3-11 on the same frustrating note that had plagued them all year their 11th defeat of the campaign by three points or less. Hank Iba's team wound up 10-16 for the year. Over at Lawrence the NIT bound Jayhawks buried hope ful Iowa State, 91-58, to claim an undisputed secondpplace finish, a feat considered just as impossible as an unshared crown several weeks ago. Ted Owens' club finished 10 4 in the league and 19-7 over all as they failed to live up to their pre-season role of fa vorites in the conference. Contenders Nebraska and Iowa State fell to an 8-6 rec ord, tying them in third with Oklahoma. Missouri, the spoilers for the Jayhawks and Huskers, settled into sixth at 5-9, while luckless Oklahoma i State and Colorado, spoilers for just about everyone, share the bottom rung at an undeserved 3-11 mark. Oklahoma attempted a ral ly in the final night's action, and outscored the Jayhawks for the night, but KU just had too much of a lead. Oklahoma's Doug Hellerson was the meet's only triple winner and the Sooners edged the Jayhawks in number of gold medals won, 8-7.
