Iowa State blanked the Wildcats 17-0 in its lone con ference triumph while Nebraska trailed the Wildcats for 59 minutes before a Bill Bomberger field goal pushed them past the Kansans 16-14 at Manhattan. On that comparison, does Nebraska have a chance to come within 15 points of an Iowa State team that has only beaten a weak New Mexico team and Kansas State? COMING BACK The Huskers rolled up 29 points last Saturday in blast ing Texas Christian University 29-0 at Fort Worth, while Iowa State was dropping a 28-14 decision to the inspired Kansas Jayhawks. The Huskers are coming back into championship form after losing to both Kansas and Colorado and could finally hit stardom against an obviously outmatched Cyclone crew Saturday at Memorial Stadium. While the easterners have individuals that could pro vide trouble for Nebraska. Iowa State doesn't field a team that can hand Nebraska's its third Big Eight loss. NO BREEZE But that doesn't mean the battle will be a breeze for a Husker team that still has conference title aspirations. Running backs Les Webster and Ben King have pounded opposing lines for more than 600 yards and are dangerous once they scoot past the front wall of enemy defenders. John Warder, the quarterback who is picking up the reigns left by the graduated Tim Van Galdcr, is currently the league's fourth leading passer and total offensive gain er. TOP RECEIVER Tom Busch, who broke the Cyclone single game pass reception mark with a 13 grab performance against the Jayhawks last week, is the conference's third leading pass receiver with 26 grabs for 350 total yards. Defensively, middle guard Willie Muldrew, is the lead ing Iowa State tackier with 32 unassisted tackles and 38 sssistcd tsclvlcs By comparison, Nebraska's All-American middle guard Wayne Meylan has been credited with 30 unassisted tack les and 39 assists. However, Iowa State is either in the league basement or next to it in rushing offense, passing offense, total of defense, total defense and scoring defense. A few stars won't be able to carry the entire load as Nebraska will increase its overall record to 5-2 and its league mark to the .500 level at 2-2. After hitting on four of five games last week to move our season's record to 73 per cent, we will try Saturday s Big Eight schedule. KANSAS OVER KANSAS STATE: In the past seven years Kansas has outscored the Wildcats by a shattering 191-3 count in the annual Sunflower State football match. Kansas may have to relish this victory for some time they close their league schedule against Colorado. Okla homa and Missouri. MISSOURI OVER OKLAHOMA STATE: All right, we know Oklahoma State upset nationally-rated Colorado last week, but if Colorado hadn't been almost crippled by bat tles with Nebraska the week before, they wouldn't have come within seven points of the Buffs. The Cowboys have been too unpredictable to give them the edge, while Missouri has played consistent foot ball each week. The Tigers lost 7-0 to Oklahoma last week and will turn their anger on another Oklahoma team Saturday at Stillwater. OKLAHOMA OVER COLORADO In the game that the entire conference has eyes upon, the Sooners led by potential All-American middle guard Granville Liggins, will hand the Bouldermen their second league loss and the defeat that will probably knock them from the Big Eight title and a national ranking. Oklahoma has been playing such strong football they are now the cream of the Big Eight crop and many doubt if there are any teams in the nation strong enough to over power them. That includes the western powerhouses. UCLA and Southern California. The defense has allowed just 16 points in five games and there a few categories the team doesn't hold an advantage over the other Big Eight foes. SHORTS Nebraska has moved into the nation's num ber one total defense spot. The Huskers have permitted only 155 average yards per contest to top the nation's other college defense crews . . . Danny Lankas, K-State's line backer" that deserves serious All-American consideration, has made 49 unassisted tackles and collaberated on 61 others . . . Colorado's Eddie Crowder returns "home" to Norman Saturday where he was an All-American quarter back on Bud Wilkinson's 1952 Big Eight championship Oklahoma swuad. Battle Of Undefeated: NU vs. Missou Frosh Cletus Fischer's Nebraska freshmen team will be shooting for their third straight victory against the Iowa State Cyclones Monday at 2:30 in Memorial Sta dium. The game, originally scheduled for Friday, was postponed due to bad weather. The Nebraska yearlings are fresh off the victory trail with wins over Kansas State 24-0 and Missouri 24 14. Led by the running and kicking of halfback Paul Rogers, a native of Rock Rapids, la., and the passing of Quarterback Rick Wen ner, the Cornhusker fresh men have been averaging around 300 yards total offense per game. The defensive unit, with !CT CAR KIATIR: - mm i;:.-;t'1f'r il . - MM -ALSO- I end Chuck Haskell and linebacker Jerry Murtaugh leading the way, must also draw as much praise as the offense. They have limited their opponents to only two touchdowns. Iowa State, a 40-7 victor over Missouri, is expected to be the Huskers toughest test this year. "We will have to improve from our games to beat this fine team," Fischer said. Nebraska will be missing the services of linebacker Dennis Gutzman and defen sive corner back Jim Anderson, both from Green Bay. Wis., listed as doubt ful performers.
