'Underground' Buttons Carry Modern Message Seminar On Draft Counseling By ANDY CORRIGAN Junior Staff Writer "Reality is a crutch." So says one of the many but tons currently on display in the Campus Underground, a Lincoln novelty and gif t shop catering to the college student. Campus Underground, formerly the Spoofer Shop, opened in October 1966. It is owned by Stan Biegen of Denver and pperated by Jerry Goldman of Lincoln. It's shelves are stocked with sweatshirts, buttons, party favors, stuffed ani mals, jewelry, and games. Posters, both personality and psychedelic, hang from the rafters. SWEATSHIRTS Campus Underground off ers a wide selection of printed teashirts and sweat shirts. These items carry such messages as "The Bus Leaves at Noon Be Under It" and "Be Nice to Me ... I'm Rich" besides the standard "I'm a Pi Phi" or "Alpha Tau Omega." A Greek coed said that she didn't like the idea of the Campus Underground selling crested sweatshirts because they could get into the wrong hands. Goldman defended the store's policy saying that anybody who bought a sweatshirt for a house he didn't belong to other than S Indents Of Latin America Asked To Register Soon The Institute for Latin American and International Studies is asking students majoring or minoring in Latin American studies to register with the depart ment. Interviews should be made with Roberto Esque-nazi-Mayo, director of the institute, at 1319 Seaton Hall, ext. 3076. The purpose of the insti tute is to advise students and to acquire information on their academic work, according to the director. for a gift would be "out of his mind." Goldman furth er stated that the store had received no complaints of this nature. VARIETY The Underground prints all of their shirts and will print anything on them for customers. A variety of buttons is on display but as Goldman said they are all apolitical. He also said that posters were the store's best selling items. Posters featuring Belmondo, Brando, Bogart, Valentino, and Jefferson Airplane, among others greet the customer as he enters the Underground. Art and psychedelic posters are also for sale. "Walk into any student's room and it's usually cov ered with posters. A lot of them have been bought here," said Goldman. PARTY FAVORS The Underground's party favors' were termed very good by one University stu dent. He qualified his state ment, however, by saying that the prices were very high. Students' reaction to the shop was varied. "I was really disappoint ed when I went in. The only neat thing they offered was printing sweatshirts for you. I thought they had a lot of junk." stated a coed cus tomer. Comments such as "I wasn't that impressed" were also prevalent among many questioned. However, some Universi ty students did have fav orable opinions. One boy commented, "I like the place. Lincoln needs more stores like the Campus Underground for diversity if nothing else.''
