In fact, University stu dents turned out two hun dred strong one Saturday morning in April to march for the Heroic's right to sell pornography or anything else. They marched completely equipped with pickets, flags, signs, a make-shift cross and a lame Saint Bernard named Moose. 'HARRASSMENT The march occurred after Eroprietor Bill Steen had een indicted on six counts of "possession with intent to sell pornographic litera ture," after three of his stu dent employees spent a night in the Lincoln jail, and after Steen had been irritated with what he termed "constant police harrassment." But Steen moved the store this summer, Steen died this summer. And the He roic's not Heroic any more. euiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiHiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiw I Placement The following interviews are scheduled for the week of Oct. 2 and will be held at the Placement Office in the Nebraska Union. Students Publishing 'First-Time' Poems A new poetry publication, the "Salt Creek Reader," appeared in one-penny, one sheet form at campus book stores four months ago. Ted Kooser, editor, and his assistant Will Fowler, both graduate students, have issued three editions, dealing exclusively with the first-time publication of con tributions from accom plished poets. "There are more poets writing good verse than there are publications in which their poetry can be printed." said Kooser, speaking of the new venture. First of the series fea tured "Tornadoes. Earth quakes, Plagues and Deaths," by Richard Gus tafson. Editor of the "Poet and Critic" magazine at Iowa State, who submitted his poem at Kooser's re quest. mBwU Taaee InMMt relee aaaly tl elaa tlHrd adeerUtlal la the Drily Nefcrat km i itandar rale ef la aer wart aarf mialmnm ckarn at Mo par rlaaaWMI imerliaa. The FM radio still blares the "1812 Overture" and "Lara's Theme" amid st thousands of books dis played on packing crates and makeshift shelves. Customers can still buy books like "Guide to North American Waterfowl," (Vol ume Two) and magazines like "The Sun Era" ("The Nudist Age,"), and the twain, esoterica and eroti ca, meet on shelves and crates three feet from one another, But there the resemblance ends. The Heroic is no longer a marketplace for "pornography," nor Lin coln's best supplier of pa per back books. After Steen's death last summer, ownership of the store fell to his mother. But his sister. Mrs. Mary Raff, of Omaha operates t h e store. So the management seems to be done in fact by two University coeds, Lin nea Sallach and Lorna Flood. Although poems by Ne braskans have not yet ap peared, contributions from faculty and students are encouraged, according to Editor Kooser. The two-man staff, in volved in a private venture, have encountered serious financial difficulties. The cost of printing on an off set press is not covered by total sales, says Kooser. Wednesday afternoon, that things were pretty "messed up" at the Heroic. Steen moved the store from its lo cation above Venice Pon tiac to a smaller, but street level location between 10th and 11th on P Streets. PAPERBACKS INCREASE Most of the Heroic busi ness is still done in nudist magazines and the like, ac cording to Miss Sallach, but the number of paperbacks of interest to University stu dents has declined, she ad mitted. The financial status of the store with regards to pub lishers is a bit uncertain at present, according to Miss Sallach. But one of Steen's favorite policies that of ordering all the paperback books in print by a given publisher has gone by the board, according to Miss Sallach. The Heroic will still order any paperback in print one copy at a time, with a ten percent discount, according to Miss Sallach.
