In speaking for the Party for Student Action (PSA)

'Mature Student Government' pgA Endorsed
Dear Editor:
Throughout the election campaign "mature student
government" has been the watchword for all executive
candidates.
Student Maturity
One brand of student maturity was demonstrated
Monday morning in a "new campus newspaper."
If this paper demonstrated the extent of our com
mittment to maturity, then I think it is time for all of us
to return to junior high and fight out our differences on
the playground.
When University students stoop so low that they have
to turn a student government election into a name-calling
campaign, then it is time to abolish student government.
Campus Politiciass
When campus politicians decry a biased student
newspaper and then publish their own four-page charac
ter assasination of the editor and the two opposing politi
cal parties, then it is time to abolish student govern
ment. When supporters of one political party are so afraid
of another that they have to resort to a series of half
truths, name-calling, and scare tactics, then it is time
to abandon common logic. (
If this is the only way that mature University Stu
dents have to settle their differences, then I am ashamed
that I am a University student.
Malicious
The "Tombstone Epitaph" was supposedly intended
as a satire. Some of it was funny. Some of it was out
right malicious. '
In the "Epitaph", Mr. Wahlgren states; "However,
Mr. Kreuscher and his dictatorship have gone a great
deal further than merely insulting the mentality of the
student body. Through calculated political subversion,
the Nebraskan has attempted to make and break politi
cal parties through the intimidation of individual candi
dates." Mr. Wahlgren went "on to suggest that a Daily Ne
braskan representative, (unnamed in the epitaph) tried to
viciously subvert John Wirth, a Student Senate candi
date, by suggesting that he support Ron Pfeifer.
Her Cousin
This "vicious subverter" lived in the same town as
John. They went to school together since first grade. She
is his first cousin. But you forgot to mention that. The
discussion between these two people had not'iing to do
with the Daily Nebraskan and furthermore, the person
in question went on to campaign for her cousin.
Come now, Mr. Wahlgren 1 Can you really be that
naive? Do you always open your mouth before you hear
all the story? In fact, did you even bother to ask Mr.
Wirth about the story?
You should be very ashamed of your actions Mr.
Wahlgren. I hope you will never again tell me or my
fellow students how someone else slants the facts.
Very Powerful
Words can be very powerful. It is extremely regret
table that you have chosen this way to carry out your
personal vendetta against Wayne Kreuscher, Ron Pfeifer,
and SDS.
In the "Epitaph", you championed the ideal of "ra
tional thought" It is very unfortunate that you ignored
"common sense" when you put out your paper.
I feel very sorry for you.

Dear Editor:
Having considered all candidates and their positions,
it is our feeling that Dick Schulze, Gene Pokorny and
Mimi Rose are the best ASUN executive candidates.
Nebraska Editorial
As the Daily Nebraskan said in its editorial of March
10:
"Schulze in many ways has the year's hardest job
designer and implementor of the Student Bill of Rights.
He has shown throughout the year his careful devotion
to detail, accuracy and seldom found mixture of practical
ity and idealism. It is likely that such a plan would have
never gone further than a student idea if it weren't for
him."
This commendation of Dick Schulze has been con
firmed for us because during the campaign no other can
didate has exhibited the understanding and insight that
are going to be so crucial next year if the Bill of Rights
is to become a reality.
'Total Education'
In supporting Gene Pokorny for 1st Vice-President,
we again turn to the Daily Nebraskan of March 10:
"Pokorny to a great extent is responsible for making
the University student's present concern with education
and its value a campus issue. He was one of the first
to coin the term "total education" and to explain what
it should mean.
The organization of the Free University and the lead
ership in organizing an effective Arts & Sciences' Stu
dent Advisory Board are to a large degree (due to) Po
korny's work and Intelligence."
Borne Truth
Here again the campaign in the last few weeks has
borne out the truth of these statements. Only Pokorny
can provide the executive leadership that will effectively
make improvement of the quality of education on our
campus one of the key goals of student government.
We support Mimi Rose for 2nd vice-president because
of her experience in both ASUN and AWS. She will be
able next year to provide both organizations with a ma
ture understanding of the roles of both within our uni
versity community.
Her experience on the ASUN Legislative Liason and
Research Committee will also greatly help ASUN contin
ue to fulfill its role as a representative of the student
body to the state.
This then is the executive ticket we think ASUN
needs next year if it is to actively take a role in im
proving our university community.

Life On Campus
Dear Editor:
The positive functions of the Tombstone Epitaph is
that it shows further evidence of life on the Nebraska
campus. The fact that its "satire was adolescent and
heavyhanded, and that its orientation toward conspiracy
theory was naive at best," was' obvious enough that dis
cerning. Inquiring students will find the Epitaph to be
only of transitory interest
Epitaph contributors have evidenced their own power
less state at being in the small minority that supports
Intolerence and tokenism, to a much greater degree than
they showed any kind of insight.

Rasmussen Endorsed
Dear Editor:
As Business Administration students, we feel that
Dave Rasmussen is an excellent candidate for the Stu
dent Senate from the College of Business Administration.
He has shown leadership and representative ability as
ASUN delegate to the model United Nations, as a mem
ber of the Junior IFC, and as a member of his frater
nity. Dave has shown his ability by becoming one of the
few freshmen at the University to become a senior di
vision debate squad member. He is also a very good
scholar as shown by his 3.6 average.
Dave has many ideas for improving the contact be
tween students in Business Administration and their sena
tors. We feel that Dave's progressive leadership and con
cern for the students of the University will become a big
asset if he is elected to the Student Senate. For these
reasons, we strongly support Dave in the election.

Neumeister, Spangler Endorsed
Dear Editor:
I should like to take this opportunity to support two
student senators for re-election. While holding two distinct
and sometimes directly opposite views, these senators
have shown themselves to be dilligent and dedicated. They
are Nesha Neumeister and Al Spangler.
Nesha Neumeister performed conscientiously and
ably both in committee work and on the floor of the
Senate.
Miss Neumeister was almost singlehandedly respon
sible for the Summer Reading Course which allows stu
dents to gain college credit for a reading list of books
read over the summer and passing a test upon return
to school in the fall. There will not be the need to at
tend a single lecture period. This concept of independent
study has become increasingly popular In the more pro
gressive educational institutions around the country. Miss
Neumeister deserves our appreciation for her dedication
on this and many other pertinent committee projects.
Al Spangler is one of the most skilled and able floor
debators in student government annals. His supreme in
terest and his long hours of work on the Student Conduct
Committee did much to make the document the fine one

minority (what is the silent Senate majority doing?), the
general attitude of the Daily Nebraskan (and what of
the general attitude of the Epitaph?), and the monopoly
of Hyde Park (perhaps the monopoly exists because no
one else bothers to show up), evidently because they have
no Interests or nothing to say. "It Is ridiculous to claim
that Hyde Park has been taken over by anyone.
They cite: (1) The vocal Senate minority. Question:
what's wrong with being either vocal or minority: Ques

Nebraskan? Question: What is the general attitude of the
Tombstone Epitaph? (3) The monopoly of Hyde Park.
Question: Is anyone prevented from registering to speak
at Hyde Park? Question: Does not the monopoly of one
group cause enough concern in others for them to par
ticipate equally?
Faulty Logic
It must be admitted that there is logic in the Tomb
stone Epitaph faulty logic to be sure, but logic never
theless. It may be of some consolation that the views
represented in the Green Sheet (probably symbolic of
envy) are those of only a few individuals who lack the
sense of justice to present accurately the factual issues
of the ASUN campaign. It remains for the clear-sighted
student to see through the McCarthyistic sham that is
the Epitaph and determine for themselves the real quali
ties of both candidates and issues involved in the cam
paign. Ladd Lonnqulst

Reply By This Method
Dear Editor:
Inasmuch as the green sheet does not give outside
parties a chance to reply to its editorial fantasies (which
is entirely consistent with its politics, of course: for ex
ample, it is not willing to allow the student to choose his
living quarters either), it is necessary to reply through
this method.
Available
One hardly knows how to reply, however. Some lies
are so broad, so large, that the problem of picking a
place to begin is a real one. For example, Davidson's pa
per on student syndicallism, which the green sheet claims
has been a great secret of The Daily Nebraskan, has
been available from the local chapter of SDS all year.
Indeed, we regularly give it away at our literature booth.
Again, it is claimed that The Nebraskan is the voice
of SDS and that it has constantly espoused our cause
this, despite the fact that the Nebraskan recommended
only two of the SDS candidates.
Again, it is claimed that Davidson's paper is the
official plan of SDS "to take over the campus." This,
despite the fact that the paper is not and never has been
the policy of National SDS but is merely Carl's opinion.
That many in SDS agree with him is true enough. But
the organization is predicated on the premise that no
national figure, no, officer, no individual can ever presume
to speak for any other member.
----- -No Mains ': ----
And indeed SDS has no plans to take over the cam
pus. Our only wish is for the students to take over the
responsibility for their own lives: not the administration,
not PSA, not SDS the individual student.
I am glad, however, that the green sheet was kind
enough to reiterate over and over and over again that
they were not, repeat not, actually going so far as to
call us communists, for this is true enough. The objec
tion that most of SDS has to the Communist Party is
that the party is determined to do its brand of 'good'
for tha people whether the people wish it or not. This
of course is our objection to Dean Ross and the adminis
trate and to the PSA. These people wish to force others
to swallow their private brand of good.
We hold that only the individual knows his brand
of good and that he should have the freedom to choose
it. Of course, as the green sheet points out, this is "a
Jeffersonian eighteenth century ideal which no longer
exists." Quite so . . . which is what concerns us. That
the SDS position, which is that every man should have
the power to make those decisions that affect his life,
is a radical one is a sad commentary on things as they
are.
Green Sheet
The green sheet may happily prepare for the twenty
first century by practicing marching in lock-step if it
chooses. SDS prefers freedom.
And there are more lies than these in their sheet:
lies of detail, lies of innuendo, lies of tone. But one does
not wish to continue to reply to each separate lie,
for one does too much honor to the teller by doing so.
What one objects to is not so much the individual lie,
not so much the slander, not even so much the utter
contempt the paper shows for the intelligence of its read
ers. What one objects to in the end is the appalling
realization that the sponsors of the green sheet do not
realize that their conduct is questionable.
Surely, somewhere at sometime in their lives, matters
of ethics, of morality, of simple honesty must have been
mentioned to these people.

Irrational Monster Is Stomping
Dear Editor,
Students beware! A monster of irrationality is now
stomping through our beloved campus. Easily identified
by large green trashsheets, the monster purports to elim
inate all other forms of irrationality and prejudices which
have previously existed on the campus. Instead it offers
an alternative the mighty green thing will usurp all bias
and prejudicial powers on campus and unify it into one
rather large green heap. How nice!
Objective Analysis
Perhaps it is time for an attempted objective analy
sis of the alarmists movement on campus. The irony of
the entire situation is that the Tombstone is the victim
of the very thing It wishes to expose or alleviate emo
tionalism. The Dead Sheet attacks the. editorials of the Nebras
kan for reflecting the views and the prejudices of the
editor. Profound, no! Editorials, even those in the Green
Sheet, are supposed to reflect the views and, inevitably,
the prejudices of the editor.
More Important for all alarmists to note is the "cal
culated" attempt by the Nebraskan to "make and break
political parties through intimidation of individual candi
dates." The question naturally arises which parties (ac
tually there is only one) and which candidates? It can
not be denied that the Nebraskan has covered the work
of both leading candidates, Schulze and Pfeifer, during
their work in the Senate this year, and more especially
ScLulze who has done a very commendable job in the
development of the Student Bill of Rights, the major is
sue. Then who is being intimidated?
Campus Takeover
The Epitaph's concrete examples of a campus take
over (similar to "Seven Days in May") should be of
Dear Editor:
If is is true that you "Ran screaming from the building
when Tombstone appeared", then you are to be com
mended for not endorsing a radical, irresponsible, and
mud-slinging publication.
Hypocrites
If Gary Wahlgren, Ron Shaffer, Ron Bellamy, Bob
Steele, Liz Itchin, and Bag Piper (whoever they may be)
consider themselves representatives of the "Progressive,
Responsible, Practical" elements of this campus, then
they must be denounced and exposed as hypocrites.
Since Shaffer and Milligan used the French socialist
movement in their denunciation of SDS, I would also like
to make an analogy, The purpose of the Tombstone
Epitaph with such headlines as "SDS Manifestor for Cam
pus Take-over", and "SDS vs. Responsible Government"
obviously to instill fear, hatred, and radical re-action
against SDS is very similar to the "Red Scare" that took
place following World Wars I and II.
Perhaps these people would like to ship all suspicious
looking NU students to Berkeley, similar to the action of
Attorney-General Mitchell Palmer, who in 1920 rounded '
up 5,000 Americans "who looked like Anarchists" loaded
them on a ship and dumped them at the port of Lenin
grad, Russia.
SDS Take-over
There is absolutely no basis for fearing a SDS take
over of Nebraska campus government. The group ob
viously doesn't have that much support and its aims are
based upon American principles of democracy and free
dom and not upon Balshevik principles of power and to
talitarian dictatorship. The only fear is that students
might take over control of ASUN thereby depriving the
power.
As for mud-slinging the slogan "Thi" Green Stamp
out dull, dirty SDS!" is obviously a good example. Per
sonally, I have never considered an SDS member as dir
tyand certainly no one can consider them dull! There
is no basis for this type of name calling and it definitely
is not the mark of a respectable campaign for student
government. It Is radical and completely lacks any ra
tional basis.
The letter to Terry Schaaf from Norbert Tiemann
was a low blow. It threw no light on any of the logical
arguments against the SDS platform. It was purely an
emotional appeal; and I, for one, will feel very emotional
about how our Governor was impressed by our respon
sible student body when I fill out my check for tuition
next semester.
No Bill Of Rights
Before closing, I might mention that I do not belong
to SDS and I too am opposed to parts of its platform.
However, as a responsible, progressive student I am
aware of the fact that there might not even be a Bill
of Rights if it weren't for SDS. The death of this organi
zation will not come through reactionary measures but
it will come when the responsible, progressive elements
of the SDS creed are adopted by a mere respectable cam
pus political group. The writers of Tombstone Epitaph
do not belong m this category.

Personal Vendetta Described
Dear Editor:
As a freshman the ASUN campaign has been a totally
new experience for me.
I haye heard many of the debates between the can
didates for the major office. My question is this: What
right has one candidate to ask another if he is moral
(Hyde Park, Thursday, April 6)? I feel that it is pain
fully obvious that office-seeker Thompson is carrying out
a personal vendetta against Dick Schulze. I believe that
this Is a degradation of the position sought after. It has
no place among intelligent human beings who are sup
posedly posting their beliefs as to how they can improve
the present University through ASUN. If mudsUnging is
the only prerequisite for an ASUN office, then by all
means, I shall cast my vote for Rich Thompson and all
others who employ his methods.
