Despite being hampered"
by a strained leg, Nebras
ka's sprint star Charlie
Greene is shooting fot h i s
third straight NCAA indoor
60-yard dash title.
Greene and the Nebraska
mile relay team will be in
action Friday and Saturday
., at Detroit where the annual
NCAA indoor unfolds.
"My leg bothers me a
little, but that's not impor
tant now," Greene said.
"The main thing I w a n t
to do is win the NCAA for
the third straight time and
I'm going all out to get
the job done whether the
leg hurts or not."
Injury Responding
Coach Frank Sevigne said
Greene's injury, suffered
while winning the Big 8 in
door 60 in :06.0 (tying the
record) last Saturday at
Kansas City, is reponding to
treatment and that he
should be ready to defend
his title.
Mile Relay
Sevigne also tabbed his
mile relay team for the
NCAA following time trials
this week.
"We're going to shoot
the works and go after that
mile relay title," Sevigne
said.
He tabbed this quartet for
the Detroit trip: Dennis
Walker, Les Hellbusch,
Hugh McGovern and Cliff
Forbes.
Hellbusch and Walker
ran on the great Husker
mile relay team that won
at Drake last year. McGov
ern and Forbes are sopho
mores who have had a fine
winter.
The Nebraska basketball
team, with a pleasingly pre-
mature invitation to the
i NIT in New York next
I week tucked under its belt,
: will face a gigantic chal
lenge when they journey to
Boulder Saturday.
The Huskers must w i n
the televised afternoon con
test with Colorado to prove
that they are at least the
second best team in t h e
Big Eight conference as the
NIT officials have indicat
ed. The Buffaloes gave Kan
sas a tough challenge in
Lawrence, falling by seven,
66-59, while Nebraska was
thrashed there, 84-58, early
this year. Even more sig
nificant is Colorado's pos
session of a victory over
Kansas in Boulder. Nebras
ka came close in Lincoln
but still was on the short
end of a 64-57 score.
University of Nebraska
officials accepted the NIT
invitation at 10:15 a. m.
Wednesday following the
receipt of a telegram invi
tation. Husker coach Joe Cipri
ano made the announce-
ment saying, "We have re
ceived an invitation to play
in the National Invitational
Tournament in New York,
with our first game slated
for Monday night."
The coach added, "All of
our players and coaches
feel this is a wonderful od
portunity to represent the
University of Nebraska and
the Big Eight Conference
in one of the greatest ath
letic events in the nation.
We will do our utmost to
fulfill the responsibility that
has been placed upon us by
this honor."
This responsibility starts
Saturday afternoon in Boul
der. Cipriano pointed this
out saying, "At the same
time, we still have to play
Colorado at Boulder on Sat
urday and this is the num
ber one problem confront
ing us.
"We now have an added
incentive to play our finest
game of the year at Colo
rado and we are directing
all our efforts toward that
goal."
The Huskers will fly
straight from the Colorado
game to New York where
they will play the Marshall
Villanova winner on Mon
day night.
