Thursday, November 10, 1966 The Daily Nebraskan Poge 6 Rood Awakening By MICK ROOD Coverage during the football season seems to provide a contrast of material for sports writers. At once, the much-read man must become an able statistician or a brilliant theorist. Grist for the sports experts' mill lately has been pure theory. The team is starting to win with that mag nificent boring fashion that makes fans persnickity and, like it was said, makes the writers turn to theory. Latest to suffer at the poke of the propagandists' dull pens is the team. While disgrunted fans indulge in the trivia of "Why don't they win by more," the sports writers accomplish little more trying to measure Husker "greatness." The latest game namely exactly a definition of Husker greatness was really Jack Mitchell's fault. All the scribes heard that Jack thought Nebraska just wasn't great whatever that Is. Anything they can do, I can do too . . . but, let's go to the source. Many pages were missing from the Rag's tattered dictionary, but the page with the word "great" re mained. On page 239, there are five definitions, all of which apply. 1. of much more than ordinary size, extent, etc. What could be more applicable to the Devaney team? Nothing more need be said. t. much above the average; esp., a) Intense: as, great pain, b) eminent: as, a great writer. Well, theyve got to be above average, football-wise. And in the examples, sideline shots this year will tell you that nobody has registered more pain at certain times than Bob Devaney. As for eminent writers, we know about them. Yeah, sure. 3. most important; main. Wrongly or rightly, what, is more important in this state than Nebraska's team. In the main too. 4. designating a relationship one generation removed: as, great-grandparent. And who but Nebraskans are more proud to say every year that this team is the granddaddy of them all, 5. excellent; fine used colloquially. The most favorite words of Husker supporters are excellent and fine everybody knows that. Well, there you have it. The ultimate in thorough Husker-greatness-calculation. Straight from Webster's New World Dictionary, with able interpretation of course. Forgetting all that, as I know we will, upcomes the Cowpokes. Several years in this series it was thought here that Nebraska might run the Staters out of the Stadium. It has yet to happen. The margin should be wider Saturday. The Huskers seem to be building to a bowl pitch in contrast to some past years. All the silly talk about how much better they could be should keep them fired up. Tommy Prothro need say no more. Through wind, sleet, snow and or rain the team will carry the mail and or the football to victory by NE BRASKA 22, OKLAHOMA STATE 0. Past Games Show O-State Tough Foe By Bob Flasnick Sports Editor Oklahoma State, a team that has been a thorn in Ne braska's side ever since they joined the Big E i g h t Conference in 1960, will bring a 2-1-1 conference rec ord to Lincoln Saturday which includes a one-point win over Colorado. Anoth er sellout crowd of ap proximately 65,000 is anti cipated. Nebraska has never lost to the Cowboys from Still water while Bob Devaney has been the Husker coach but Nebraska has never beaten Oklahoma State by more than two touchdowns. That was in 1962 when the Huskers won 14-0 in Devan ey's first year at Nebraska. In the two following years Nebraska won by scores of 20-16 and 27-14. Last year's game at Still water produced the slim mest win margin for Ne braska, 21-17. Nebraska kept an undefeated season in tact by driving 76 yards in the final five minutes for the winning touchdown. Cowboy fullback Wal Gar rison was a one-man gang in the 1965 encounter. Gar rison is gone this year and in his place as the leading Cowboy rusher is fullback Jack Reynolds. He has lugged the ball 105 times this year for a 3.8 yard av erage. Nebraska's Harry Wilson ranks two notches above Reynolds in Big Eight rush ing with a 4.6 yard average in 98 carries. Both Sugar and Orange Bowl representatives will scout Saturday's game. Dr. Fred Wolfe will be making his third trip to the Corn husker campus for the Sug ar Bowl. It will be the sec ond trip to Lbicoln for t h e Orange Bowl's Jim Llewel lyn and Bob Hector. It was announced Wednesday that there is a good chance that defensive tackle Carel Stith, halfback Ron Kirkland, and right end Dennis Richnafsky will be ready for Oklahoma State. All three were on the Husker injury list early in the week. Stith was sidelined with an ankle sprain last Satur day at Kansas while Rich nafsky and Kirkland were injured in the Wisconsin and Iowa State games re spectively. Husker quarterback Bob Churchich will be shooting for another Nebraska rec ord Saturday. He needs only two yards passing to break the season record of 975 yards set by D e n n i s Cla ridge in 1962. Last week at Kansas Churchich became the all time career total offensive record holder with 2,675 yards and the Husker rec ord holder for most passes attempted in one season (131). The Columbus, Neb., Chamber of Commerce has named Saturday's game "Marv Mueller Day," in honor of their hometown de fensive standout. A large delegation of Columbus fans will travel to the game via special buses. A total of 24 Nebraska seniors will make their final appearance in Memorial Stadium Saturday. They are LaVerne Allers, Gary Brichacek, Ken Brunk, Kaye Carstens, Bob Churchich, Langston Cole man, Rick Coleman, Dick Czap, Bob Hill, Ron Kirk land, Lou Narish, Jim Os berg, Tom Pappas, Kelly Peterson, and Bob Pickens. Ron Poggemeyer, Steve Schaefer, Lynn Senkbeil, Carel Stith, Pete Tatman, Dennis Thorell, Jim Un rath, Larry Wachholtz and Harry Wilson. "I'm very pleased," Pot ter said of the squad's pre season progress. "As far as the squad is concerned, we have depth something usually lacking in our fresh men." "We have more speed and quickness," he added and then pointed out that the 1966-67 frosh are a big ger squad than the NU standouts who have vaulted the Cornhuskers into nation al basketball prominence. "We're superior to what we had last year." said the coach. "I don't think there's any question about that." The freshmen initiate their season Thursday, Dec. 1, against Drake at Des Moines. The yearlings have an eight-g a m e schedule, three of the tilts at home. On Dec. 5, NU's frosh will host the Creston Junior Col lege varsity at the Coliseum at 7:30 p.m. in Lincoln. It is the only non-preliminary contest of the campaign. "This will give the fresh men a night of their own instead of just a prelimin ary game," said Potter. The other matches will precede Cornhusker varsity games or be away games. Potter, who has had the frosh in practice since Oct. 17, indicated the probable contenders for starting po sitions this season: Tom Line of Los Angeles, Frosh May Sign For BB Kernals Freshmen interested in becoming members of Ker nals for basketball season may sign up at the Nebras ka Union Thursday begin ning at 11:30 a.m. Only those freshmen who were not members of Ker nels for football are eligible.
