When Nebraska basket
ball coach Joe Cipriano
says "We're in better con
dition than we've ever
been," it makes one feel he
is not talking about physi
cal shape alone.
His Cornhusker squad,
which finished with a 20-5
record last season, has a
lot of things going for it, in
his estimation.
"The players' attitude is
better than its ever been.
In the past we've had to
sell them on the fact that
they could win," he said.
Nebraska will have, how
ever, one thing coming at
it instead of going for it.
The competition in the con
ference is tight.
"This is the first year so
many Big Eight teams are
in contention," said Cipri
ano. He listed all but Okla
homa State and Missouri as
possible potshooters for the
conference title.
Meanwhile, back on the
positive side, the NU men
tor noted, "This is the first
year that we've had all of
our players under our own
system."
In addition to this is the
potential of the sophomores.
"There is a chance some
of them could be a surprise
to us," said Cipriano.
Asked about the difficulty
of duplicating last season's
accomplishments, the coach
pointed out the absence of
1965-66 standouts Grant Sim
mons, Coley Webb and Fred
Hare.

It might have been frustrating to the crowd Sat
urday, but think how Nebraska's proud offensive pla
toon must feel.
A cynic wouldn't have any trouble inventing hud
dle dialogue. The possibilities seem to be endless.
For their opening drive against Colorado this
Saturday, a planned series of four plays might go like
this.
First down: The pitchout fumble and recovery
play, sometimes known to gain six yards.
Second Down: The strategic throw-it-over-every-body
long pass with three receivers open 20 yards
behind the ball. Builds foes confidence.
Third down: The quarterback sneak-but-drop-tne-ball-first
plunge. Also builds foe's morale.
Fourth down: The big gamble: the fullback dropsy
draw where the back rambles for 15, loses the ball
somewhere around a teammate . . . hoping he will re
cov6r Perhaps sadly missing last game was the Husker
quarterback option of old. Fred Duda ran this one
to perfection. It is this play, that against a good team,
must work to make the ground game effective. The
Huskers were able to run over Kansas State when
aroused, with the basic power plays. This won t work
against Colorado or the rest of the schedule.
All of which leads to what will Devaney change,
if anything, offensively for the Buffalo contest? A
Lincoln Star story Indicated secret doings were in or
der when the team moved inside Tuesday. Coach De
vaney insists the offense will try to run the same
offensive plays . . . just doing the jobs better. Which
will it be?
Statistics show that a good passer can make head
way against the Buffs. Opponents have completed 68
for 131 for 718 yards against Colorado. There have
been 10 interceptions.
Tradition shows Nebraska has needed the big plays,
not the line plunges, to win in Boulder.
On the other hand, Nebraska tradition shows Ne
braska power plays can grind anyone when the need
be. Notable exceptions were the 1962 Missouri Tigers
and the 1964 Sooners.
What will the Man use in Boulder?
As fate would have it, I was 8 for 10 on the small
school efforts last week. Slippery Rock was indeed
blasted 19-0, contrary to Mr. Harmon even. Emory
& Henry managed to win 13-7, and Northland over
came Lakeland 7-6. Real heartbreakers.
Returning to the larger teams like Nebraska and
Colorado. If the Huskers falter it won't be against
the Buffs. It will take some flash to win. Drink a lot
before and during the game and leave the driving to
the football team. I see it NEBRASKA 28. COLORA
DO 16.
Notre Dame to struggle past Oklahoma; Purdue to
upset Michigan State; Oklahoma State over Kansas;
SMU over Texas Tech; TCU to edge Auburn; Florida
State over Miss. St.; Missouri over Iowa State; Kan
sas State over Cincinnati; Tennessee over South Car
olina; LSU to upset Florida; Duke over North Caro
lina St.; Army to edge Pitt; and Illinois can edge
Stanford.
Now 28 for 50 on the toughies.
Importance of being Earnest award of the week.
Nebraska's yell leader was really trying for spirit
last Saturday. The majority of the card section peo
ple, desperately trying to watch the game, ignored
most of the cheerleaders' creative yells.
After a few rousing C-o-o-o-o-rnhusker's and Hit-That-Line's,
the yell leader saw his chance. After.
Wayne Meylan blocked his punt and scored, the Block
That Kick yell became Meylan, Block That Kick.
The innovation was used on the next punt.
Too bad, Wayne was taking a breather on the
bench as that next punt sailed down the field unscathed.

ers, a team that has gained
a reputation of playing un
emotional but dead serious
football, might be trying to
fire things up a little for
this Saturday's encounter
with Colorado.
"We've always had a lot
of hustle and spirit in prac
tice," said Husker Coach
Bob Devaney Wednesday,
but he added that the
Huskers have shown "a lit
tle additional spirit" in
preparation for the Buffa
loes. It might come in handy
because the Buffs appear to
have caught fire last Sat
urday when they beat Iowa
State 41-21 and took over the
Big Eight rushing lead in
the process. Colorado has
run for a 208.6 yard aver
age in the last five games
compared to Nebraska's
198.
But the Huskers lead the
Big Eight in rushing de
fense, allowing five oppo
nents an average of 46.6
yards on the ground, which
could make for a hard
fought contest at Boulder.
Nebraska has been ham
pered by injuries so far this
season, but there was a
bright note Tuesday.
Senior defensive halfback
Kaye Carstens, who injured
a knee last Saturday against
Kansas State, was running
with the "Black Shirts" and
is expected to be ready for
Colorado.
But the status of right end
Dennis Richnafsky and half
back Ron Kirkland doesn't
look so good. Devaney said
Tuesday that both Kirkland
and Richnafsky would be
sidelined for two more
weeks and they would "def-
