Hearing that Bob Devaney ordered a contact session
during the" playing season is a shocker ... in fact, the
move is unique in the five years the coach has been here,
say the experts.
We can appreciate the fact that The Man is trying to
unsputter the rushing attack sputters, but really, resort
ing to contact may be going too far. Tough springs and
falls, complemented by psychology and technique during
the season has always been the Devaney Way.
Imagine the shock that must have hit the squad, by
now well-oriented to the Devaney system.
Picture yourself hiding in the locker room the other
night:
"Did he say contact?"
"Yeah."
"But that's unfair. Really scrimmaging against the
other guys."
"Yeah."
"Somebody could get hurt you know. Maybe we ought
to go on strike, you know, picket the game Saturday."
"Yeah."
"Why don't you help me with these picket signs? How
about 'Devaney Unfair' or 'NU Players for Fair Workers'
Compensation.'
"Yeah."
"Say, maybe it isn't so bad after all. I've heard other
teams try contact during the week."
"Yeah."
"Well, let's try it just this week. I need the exercise."
. "Yeah."
Seriously, (not for long) the contact shows, I think,
real concern over the Husker ground game. The concern
should pay off.
Last word was that the backfield (Wilson, Tatman
and Kirkland) that gained almost 1,500 yards last year
playing part time should start perking.
It seems every year the NU line has some trouble
with a stunting defense. This year, that trouble came ear
ly, dealt out by capable opposing lines. Think they can
adjust?
Despite contributing one of those unwanted wait-for-the-whistle-then-pile-on
tackles in his debut, Wilber's Bob
Ahleschwede gave Devaney the most consistent kick-offs
since he's been here last week.
Word has it plans were to red-shirt the former
stater and try to use him on the line in addition to future
kicking duties. Kicking problems now junked that plan.
Despite not being able to make the traveling team as
a lineman, Ahlschwede will probably make it to Ames via
the toe. Little things mean a lot.
Incidently, two Nebraska towns could be fighting over
No. 76. Ahlschwede. Some say he's from Crete, some say
from Wilber. Actually, my Wilber wife points out Bob
lives on a farm closer to Crete than Wilber. But, he went
to Wilber High, hence, the Wolverines can claim him for
ever. Anyway, it helps one thing. The little lady now man
ages to watch the kick-offs before losing interest on Satur
days. Confidence in the Husker camp is growing, so make
the Ames score NEBRASKA 37, IOWA STATE 8.
Now 16 for 23, we try again:
Alabama squeeze over Mississippi; LSU comeback
over Miami; Syracuse's first over Maryland; Texas Tech
over Texas A&M; Navy to edge Air Force; Missouri to
upset UCLA; Kansas, even injured, can edge Minnesota;
Colorado over Kansaas State; Iowa over Wisconsin; Okla
homa State over Houston; Kentucky over Auburn; Ohio
State over Washington; South Carolina can surprise Geor
gia; and Baylor over Washington State.

"We've opened up as
much as we can," said Bob
Devaney Wednesday, "now
we have to do what we have
done better." The Husker
coach was talking about the
upcoming Big Eight opener
with Iowa State this Satur
day in Ames.
Devaney sent his squad
through contact drills Tues
day to try to find out what
has been ailing the offen
sive ground game.
In the past he has not
made the first units scrim
m a g e during the week be
tween games, but he felt
the gamble was necessary
to work on the running
game.
"The ends have been do
ing a good job, and the
tackles are getting better,"
said Devaney, "The running
game takes a little longer
to get going, they have to
learn to adjust to the
stunts."
"No Prep Teams"
Referring to the high
school records of his four
sophomore quarterbacks at
Oklahoma State, Phil Cutch
in said: "Yes, all of our
quarterbacks had great
high school records but'
then, we're not playing any
high school teams this
year."

the Utah State game with
a few minor injuries, b u t
everyone is expected to be
ready by Saturday.

Devaney said the Church

of Wayne Weber if he was
able to go sufficiently on
the ankle. "We'll start

sitions this week and are
expected to open against
Iowa State. The rest of the
lineup that opened against
Utah State will remain in
tact against the Cyclones.

Stapleton has made some
player personnel shifts this
week in an effort to beef
up the Cyclone offense fcr
Saturday's game with Ne
braska. He also spent consider
able time with his sophomore-studded
defense unit.
The six youngsters in the
defense made far too many
mistakes against Okla
homa, Stapleton felt, and a
special effort to help them
mature more rapidly was
made during the Nebras
ka preparations.
On offense t h e main
move was to return sopno
more Ben King to the start
ing fullback spot, a role he
filled earlier in the season.
Willie Robinson, a veteran
and the No. 2 ball carrier
a year ago, was barely
able to break even against
Oklahoma.
Stapleton also shifted
Gary King, a swift-moving
senior, from split end
to tailback. That released
Larry Ilolton for a return
to the defense behind Lar
ry Carwell who was in
jured in the Oklahoma con
test. Carwell is figured to
be ready to play by Sat
urday, however.
Greg Dukstein, a sopho
more who divides his time
between split end and de
fensive halfback, will be
Eppie Barney's back-up
man at the end spot.
