Page 6 The Daily Nebraskan Friday, September 16, 1966 Where the Action Is Huskers Picked To Win In Opener Against TCU By Larry Eckholt "Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow", and in definitely, until the last post, season bowl game of the season, sports talk around the country will center around college football. And tomorrow Nebraska will meet Texas Christian In what has been the most publicized and most antici pated season opener for the Huskers since 1!)G0 when Ne braska defeated Texas 14-13 io start a dismal 4-6 season under Bill Jennings. Bob Devaney has rebuilt, in the short span of five vears, the Cornhusker tradition that for 77 years has brought pride to the citizens of the state, alumni of the University, and Nebraskans living around the country. Winning (and the national publicity that comes with it) has made Nebraskans take a special pride in their state when so many things are being said to discredit it. By working, closely with the Athletic Department as I have, one can see how wildly enthusiastic this nation is when it comes to sports. The Sports Information Office received and answered over a thousand letters this summer concerning Nebras ka athletics and football in particular. Letters from every state and a few from soldiers sta tioned in Viet Nam requested pictures, rosters, autographs and almost every kind of information possible. Our office made a point to answer each request personally. Some of the letters were strictly in business form; some were very humorous. Each had the same message: "I want to know about the Huskers." A letter from a man from Minnesota attached a P.S. an NIE (Nebraskan-in-Exile) I appreciate very much the fact that NU Is winning again. It makes being away from home a little bearable. NU SMASHING Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl on New Years Day? HOPE SO!!!" So, with the 1966 season only a few hours away, where does that leave us, the future alumni of NU? Well, Sports Illustrated, college football's "Bible," has already offered a challenge to Nebraska partisans in its Sept. 19 issue on College Football. Preceeding Si's story on Nebraska is a capsule biog raphy of one of the all-time greats in football's history Red Grange. It recalls Illinois' 24-7 rout of Nebraska in 1923 when Grange scored three touchdowns against the Huskers. The last paragraph of the story reads "There will be running and singing at Illinois this year, but not any where near as much of either as is likely to be seen or heard at Nebraska, which is not at all ashumble as it was when it started Red Grange galloping toward his spectacular career." Sports Illustrated has many good things to say about Nebraska. So have most of the other pre-season polls and prediction sheets. Nebraska is a recognized powerhouse and we can all help make it more noticeable than ever before. College football has fabulous phychological benefits. What better way is there to publicly display all of the emotions that have been building since school started? Where else can you go to scream, holler, jump up and down, wave your arms, clap your hands, and boo, with out being looked at as some kind of fool? There's probably only one other place and that's dur ing basketball season, still about three months away. So . . . Tomorrow when you go to Memorial Stadium and take your place with the other 63,000 remember you have to sit quietly and almost apathetically through most of the week in a stuffy classroom. Tomorrow, when you're sitting in the crisp Septem ber air that is distinctly Nebraskan, become an audible part of that Big Red tradition: Nebraska Football. By Bob Flasnick Sports Editor Football fever is be ginning to run at a high pitch on the Cornhusker campus in anticipation of Saturday's season o p e n er against the Horned Frogs of Texas Christian Univer sity. The site will be Nebras ka's recently enlarged Me morial Stadium, the time, 2:00 p.m. For new students at Ne braska, the pagentry provided by Nebraska's 175-man marching band, "Sunshine Girl" Susy Kunc, and an expected crowd of 63,500 (many of them be decked in red), not to men tion Coach Bob Devaney's winning team, should prove to be an exciting experience. Saturday's battle will pit two highly ranked teams. Nebraska is rated number three in the nation and is predicted to win the game by as many as two touch downs. Texas Christian is picked for its highest Soutwest Con ference finish since 1960 when they were pegged for second place. In nationwide prediction polls this year the Horned Frogs have con sistently been ranked among the top 20 teams. Nebraska has been hampered by injuries this year, but the physicians have done a good job and .mi.mil. ill! nilli . iil.y mm i.miini.mn urn I i.u.unn i.igmi m. i .ui.ui.. mil . m the Huskers should be at near full strength against TCU. Coach Devaney talks cau tiously about Nebraska and the first game saying, "we can't really tell before the first game. We feel this year we have had more in juries to key people, and this has slowed us down. "On the positive side, we feel we have a good group of backs and good defensive balance. On the negative side, we feci we are shy depth at center and lack overall speed," he said. So that's how it looks going into the first game of the season Don't let Coach Devaney 's unoptomistic words worry you. Anyway not yet.
