Two speakers at a Young
Democrats meeting Tuesday
night urged the students to
participate actively in the
year's political campaigns.
"Your potential is very
great," Dr. Davil Trask, as
sociate professor of history,
said.
"We're counting on you,"
Dr. F. J. Pepper, executive
secretary of the college YD's,
said.
Pepper said he feels the Ne
braska Democratic Party will
be able to take the governor
ship and the U.S. Senate posi
tions this year as well as to
elect Democrats to the House
of Representatives.
Trask discussed the national
and state elections as a "de
tached" observer. The Demo-
l cratic Party is "not likely to
win a single election this fall,

will try-out for the Kosmet
Klub Ivy Day sing at 2 p.m.
Saturday in the conference
rooms of the Nebraska Union.
From these groups eight
finalists will be selected for
competition on Ivy Day.
The groups trying out Sat

mocratic Party in Nebraska
"does not in fact exist as a
party," he said.
Trask also advocated that
the Democratic Party come
out "four square for an in
come tax." To do so, he said,
would not harm the party in
Omaha or Lincoln, as some
people have feared, if the
party was careful to point out
that there is now only a
choice between "a sales tax
or an income tax." Omahans,,
definitely do not want a sales
tax, Trask said.

Schaaf consistently empha
sized that he feels it is nec
essary to "ask, not tell the
Board of Regents what to
do."
Schaaf attacked Abbott,
charging that he had attend
ed "only one" Student Senate
session this year. "Mickey
Mouse or not (Student Sen
ate)," Schaaf said, "Abbott
is still going to have to work
under that system. I don't
feel that he has genuine in
terest in the existing student
government."
"Responsible leadership on
my part" was Schaaf's re
sponse to the question of
what he expected to offer to
Senate. "Is he qualified to
lead?" Schaaf asked indicat
ing Abbott, "I don't believe
he is."
Abbott and Schaaf clashed
several times during the hour
and a half debate.
"This Bill of Rights (the
CFDP proposal) means that
we can stand up as men in
the intellectual and state
community," Abbott said.
"That in no way answered
mv question," Schaaf replied.
"It certainly did," Abbott
fired back.
"Never mind," Schaaf an
swered. Each candidate made a ten
minute presentation and each
had five additional minutes
later for rebuttals and ques
tions to opponents or for
clarifications of points. The
floor was then apened for
questions which continued for
about half an hour.
Schaaf explained his ap
proach to a bill of rights say
ing that the purpose of the
Student Senate would be to
"represent students to the
Board of Regents in the hope
that they will consent to
what the students want.'
Carl Davidson asked
Schaaf if the intent of his
bill of rights plan is to "help
the administration make our
decisions for us about cer
tain rules?"
Davidson added, "Abbott is
giving you the power to make
those decisions yourselves,"
before he was called to order
for upsurping the floor.
University students will
vote on constitutional amend
ments concerning the pro
posed, office of second vice
president in the ASUN elec
tion next Wednesday.
Student Senate passed a
motion several weeks ago
suggesting this office and ask
ing the students to consider it
as a constitutional amend-ment.
At the same time the new
office is voted on, students
will also elect a second vice
president who will take the of
fice if it is approved.
The following, which must
run three times prior to t h e
election in the Daily Nebras
kan, according to the ASUN
constitution, is a copy of the
proposed constitutional
amendments.
STUDENT SENATE
CONSTITUTIONAL AMMENDMENTS
1. In Article V, Section 1, part A
Insert the word "First" before
"Vice President".
2. In Article V, Section 2, part
A-4
Insert the word "First" before
"Vice President".
3. In Article V, Section 2, part
b, and Part B, Section 1 and 2.
Insert the word "First" before
"Vice President".
4. In Article V, Section 2, part C.
Add the following provisions:
The Second Vice-President
1. Election. The Second Vice
President of the Association shall
be chosen on the basis of a sep
arate election.
2. Eligibility and Term of Of
fice. The eligibility and term of
office of the Second Vice Presi
dent of the Association shall be
identical with those of the Presi
dent of the Association. .
3. Replacement. In case the
Second Vice President of the As
sociation shall become unable to
fulfill his duties by reason of dis
qualification, disability, death or
impeachment and conviction, re
placement for the position shall
be appointed by the President
with approval of the Senate.
4. The position of the Second
Vice President shall become ef
fective upon the approval of the
above amendments In the gener
al election of 1966.
5. In Article V, Section 2, part E.
Insert the words "First and

6. In Article V, Section 3, part

of the word "six".
