'v .'4 -i Eight aseball Begins The early break in the weather has enabled Nebras ka's baseball team to prac tice outside regularly for the past two weeks in prepara tion for the season openers in Houston, Texas March 28. Coach Tony Sharpe will split his squad into two teams when they travel south to Houston. One team will play the University of Houston while the other takes on Hous ton Baptist College. Sharpe said the early good weather has put the Huskers ahead of previous years "as far as conditioning." Better Hitting Sharpe said "at this stage over last year we appear to have a potentially better hit ting club." He has been es pecially impressed with the hitting of sophomores Wayne Kissler and Bob Brand. The Husker coach said the two sophomores had been hitting the ball better than he had expected considering their age. Brand, however.chipped a bone in a finger during last Thursday's practice and, ac cording to Sharpe, will be slowed for about a week. Sharpe hopes that this vear's over-all pitching bal ance "will pick up the slack" left by last year's leading hurlcr Stan Bahnsen. As a sophomore Bahsen led the Husker pitchers to the best RBI average in the Big Eight of 2.43, but was later drafted by the New York Yankees. Considering his pitchers, Sharpe said junior Gary Nei- bauer has looked most im pressive." He has also been -. TV Game ThiiFall? An article in the Sunday Journal-Star by Curt Mosher reported that Nebraska "will again take on Oklahoma on Thanksgiving Day before a national television audience." The article said, "There has been no official announce ment as the network releases the entire television package at Cine time, but just as last year the Oklahoma-Oklahoma State game is being shifted to make way for it. "The OU-OSU game will be shifted off the Nov. 26 date to Dec. 3. Then the Nebraska Oklahoma game in Norman can be moved from Nov. 19 to Thanksgiving Day which falls on Nov. 24. "All of this happened last year when the NU-OU game became the first Big Eight Conference game to be tele cast nationally." ' happy with the performances juniors Bob Churchich and Mickey Zangari. Sharpe said each of the pitchers has had the oppor tunity to work three or four times off of the mound in in-tra-squad games. Experimental Stage Seven of last year's regu lars have departed causing Sharpe some concern about their defensive replacemnts. He said the infield and out field "are still in a experi mental stage." Right field is one of the main problem spots for the Husker coach. Last year's scampering right fielder, Frank Solich, tried out with the squad earlier this year, but a knee injury he sustained in football will cause him to be unavailable for action this season. Sharpe did say that he thought this season's club would have more depth in the infield, along with more and strength in pinch-hitters pinch-runners. Sharpe termed the return of senior Randy Harris "a pleasant development." Har ris was the club's leading hitter last year when he re ceived a brain concussion during batting practice which caused him to miss the last three weeks of the 1965 season. The Husker coach said team spirit has been good, adding "getting outside is a real boost. The kids are look ing forward to the season." A young Colorado baseball team, hurt by heavy player losses since last year, is in the final month of pre-season preparation. Coach Frank Prentup is working with a squad which includes only one regular from the 1965 crew which fin ished fifth in the Big Eight. Second baseman Steve Best, last year's second-best hitter, is the only regular back al ter catcher Don Sessions signed a pro contract. At least six sophomores are tabbed for starting roles in the Colorado's April 1st open er at Texas Western. Coach Chet Bryan's Okla homa State baseball team takes a five-game road swing to the University of Houston next week. It will be a shake down cruise before starting Big Eight conference action. Bryan says OSU "appears to be a little better defen sively, maybe better pitching and the big question is hit ting." One of last year's leading pitchers, Don Kuyendall, have given up pitching because of a sore arm and is bidding for the right field job. Bryan doubted if anyone would go all the way on his pitching staff. "We have a definite rotation setup," said Bryan. The Nebraska gymnastic team totaled 143.85 points in the Big Eight Gymnastics Meet held in Lawrence Kan sas Friday 'to end up fourth in the Big Eight team stand ings. Iowa State, led by all around winner Jerry Fontana, swept all seven events and won their s e c o nd straight team title. Iowa State scored 185.55 out of a possible 210 points. Colorado had 175.25, and Kan sas 1B5.40. Oklahoma and Kansas State were fifth and sixth in team standings with 99.80 and 92.50 respectively. Oklahoma was romnetin? for the first time. Oklahoma State and Missouri did not compete, In Saturday's finals Ne braska's highest finish was third in the long horse by Rich Beran. The Husker's Pat McGill took fourth in floor exercise on Saturday and NU's Bob Santoro was sixth in the long horse. Three of Iowa State's pre meet leaders, one ranked No. 1 nationally, were upset by Colorado men in the finals. The upsets gave Colorado four first place medals to three for Iowa State, but the league champion Cyclones had five runner-up spots to one for Colorado and a 4-2 edge in third place finishes. About two-thirds of the place-winners improved their scores over their Friday marks. Iowa State had 21 place winners, Colorado 11, Kansas 7, and Nebraska 3.
