day this week, but
By Bob Samuelson
Second guessers are having a field
the unalterable fact of defeat remains.
Gone almost completely unnoticed in the Orange Bowl
was the outstanding play of individuals. Bob Churchich, for
example, who had his finest day at the Husker helm, was
relegated to obscurity by a fellow named Sloan.
Tony Jeter, who played his finest game of the season,
deserves plaudits, as do Ben Gregory, Freeman White,
Wayne Mehlen, Mike Kennedy and many others.
But to the victors go the spoils. And but for roughing the
kicker penalty who knows?
Still, there was one thing in evidence on the field down
In Miami that has been seen so many times before this year.
It is a combination of pride and courage which this
writer will remember as the hallmark of this year's football
team. One could call it Big Red Spirit, I guess.
Big Red Spirit came from a fourteen point deficit at
Columbia, Missouri, (Paul Christman be damned): Big Red
fepirn put togemer a tiawiess drive against a fine Oklahoma
State team to pull that game from the brink of defeat; Big i
Red Spirit refused to be intimidated by Oklahoma's ball:
grabbing tactics. j
Big Red Spirit is exemplified by Fred Duda whom some
said would never play football again; Big Red Spirit is
exemplified by Frankie Solich who weighs 157 pounds, 150 of
which are heart
Big Red Spirit is repeatedly shown by Bob Devaney, the j
coach of the year this year and every year as far as this
scribe is concerned. j
So instead of second guessing, here's simply a humble
tip of the hat to as fine an aggregation of athletes and
coaches that have existed anywhere, anytime. And to them,
thanks. Thanks for the first perfect season since 1915, and
thanks for a lesson in what good football can do for the
pride of a university and a state.

sion for t o t a 1 pounds lifted.
His 330-pound performance in
the bench press, 475 in t h e
squat event and 500 in the
dead lift all broke old rec
ords. AH three events totaled
1305 pounds, which entitle
liagm to tne new record in i
that division.
Also in the heavy weight
class, Jim Beltzer. Kappa
Sigma, bettered the old rec
ord, including Hagin's record
the title at 350 pounds. Belt
zer also tied Hagin for the
new mark in the squat at 475
pounds. Beltzer's 1280 pound
total was good enough to
break the old record in the
heavyweight class; however,
Hagin's 1305 in that same
category entitles him to hold
i the new record.
Another intramural power
lifts contest will be held sec

ROMAN IN THE GLOAMIN
Now as the end of the first semester draws near, ne fact
emerges clearly: you are all going to flunk out c. chool.
There are two things you can do about it. First, you can
marry money. (I don't mean you marry the money ?';; I
mean you many a pemon who has money. Weddings be
tween people and currency have not been legal anywhere in
the United States since the Smoot-Hawley Act. Personna
Stainless Steel Blades, on the other hand, are legal every
where and are, indeed, usd with great p'easure and satis
faction in all fifty states of the Union and Duluth. I bring
up Personna Stainless Stee ! Blades because this column is
sponsored by the makers of Personna Stainless Steel Blades,
and they are inclined to get edgy if I omit to mention their
product. Some of thT3 get edgy and some get double-edgy
because Personna Blades come bo;h in Injector style and
Double Edge style, t
But I digress. I was saying you can marry money but, of
course, you will not because you are a high-minded, clean
living, pure-hearted, freckle-faced American kid. Therefore,
to keep from flunking, you must try the second method:
you must learn how to take lecture .notes.
According to a recent survey, eleven out of ten American
undergradyates do not know the proper way to take lecture
notes. To illustrate this appalling statistic, let us suppose
you are taking a course in history. Let us further suppose
the lecturer is lecturing on the ruling houses of England.
You listen intently. You write diligently in your notebook,
making a topic outline as you have been taught. Like this:
I. House of Plantagenet.
II. House of Lancaster.
IIL House of York.
x ;(lxiv 0v
Then j-ou stop. You put aside your pen. You blink back
a tear, for you cannot go on. Oh, yes, you know very well
that the next ruling house is the House of Tudor. The trou
ble is vou dmi'l know the Roman numeral that comes after
III.
It may, incidentally, be of some comfort to learn that
you are not the only people who don't know Roman numer
als. The fact is, the Romans never knew them either. Oh, I
suppose they could tel! you bow much V or X were or like
that, but when it came to real zingers like LXI or MMC,
they just flang away their styluses and went downtown to
have a bath or take in a circus or maybe stib Caesar a few
times.
You may wonder why Rome stuck with these ridiculous
numerate when the Arabs had such a nice, simple system.
Well, sir, the fact is that Emperor Vespasian tried like crazy
to buy the Arabic numerals from Suleiman The Magnificent,
but Suleiman wouldn't do business not even when Vespa
sian raked bis bid to 100,000 gold piastres, plus he offered
to throw in the Colosseum, the Appian Way, and Techni
color. So Rome stuck with Roman numerals to it sorrow, as
it turned out. One day in the Forum, Cicero and Pliny got
to arguing about how much is CDL times M VI X. Well, sir,
pretty soon everyone in town came around to join the has
sle. In all the excitement, nobody remembered to lock the
north gate and wham! before you could say am Umga'm
rushed the Goths, the Visigoths, and the Green Bay Packer!
Well, sir, that's the way the empire crumbles, and I di
gress. Lei's get back to lecture notes. Let's also say a word
about Burma Shave. Why? Because Burma Shave is made
by the makers of Personna Blades who, it will be recalled,
are the sponsors of this column. They are also the sponsors
of the ultimate in shaving luxury'- First coat your kisfier
with Burma Shave, regular or menthol or, if you are the
devil-may-care sort, some of each. Then whisk off your stub
ble with an incredibly sharp, unbelievably durable Personna
Blade, Injector or Double Edge remembering first to put
the blade in a razor. The result: facial felicity, cutaneous
cheer, epidermal elysium. Whether you shave every day,
every III da;.-, or every VII, you'll always find Personna
and Burma Slave a winning combination.
