Huskers Pace Big iiglti
Defensive backs Johnny
Roland of Missouri and Larry
Wachholtz of Nebraska are
providing the offensive starts
with their defensive offensive
efforts in Big Eight Con
ference football.
Roland has handled the ball
31 times on punt, kickoff, and
interception returns for 459
yards. This gives him an av
erage of 11.4 yards.
Only one other in the Con
ference has a better average,
Wachholtz, the pint-sized safe
ty at Nebraska who has been
overshadowed by other Husk
er super stars. Wachholtz tot
als in the defensive categories
come to 447 yards, a few off
the aggregate of Roland, but
Wachholtz has had only 27
chances, racking up a fantas
tic 16.6 average.
Two true offensive backs,
Nebraska's Fred Duda and
Oklahoma State's Walt Garri
son, made bids to get back
into the Big Eight's individ
ual statistical races, with
personal highs for the season.
Duda hit for 229 total yards
against Colorado. This gives
him a two-game total of 372,
the C o n f e r e n c e's best
back-to-back accumulation of
the year, and second place in
total offense with 693, just 77
behind Colorado's Bernie Mc
Call, who has 767.
Husker Rating Slips
The see-saw in top ten rat
ings continued this week as
Nebraska held onto the AP's
third place ranking but
slipped to second in the UPI
poll.
The Huskers gained their
second place UPI rating a
mere two points ahead of the
third ranked Arkansas Razor
backs, who were second last
week. Last week the top spot
in the wire service olls were
shared by Nebraska and Ar
kansas but this week Mich
igan State is rated number
one by both polls.
Tigers Ranked
Next Saturday's opponent
Missouri jumped to an eighth
place ranking in the UPI's
poll. Husker coach Tom Os
borne noted that the Tigers
have only run into trouble
against real good teams.
Osborne said the best way
to describe Missouri is SOUND
and that it is difficult to find
any weaknesses to exploit.
Nebraska is readying itself
for the Missouri encounter.
Two starters, Langston Cole
man and Ron Kirkland, are
the only doubtfuls for the
Columbia trip. Charlie "Choo

from scoring. The Cyclones
