Student Demonstrations
Oppose Viet Nam Policy
Demonstartions, teach-ins
and discussions involving
United States policy in Viet
Nam took place on campuses
across the nation this past
weekend.
The Iowa State Daily re
ported protest movements at
Iowa State University Friday.
One group held a peace vigil
in front of the Naval Re
serve Officers Training Corps
Building.
Another group appeared
late Friday afternoon at the
Naval Armory protesting
what they considered the
"absurdity of demonstrating."
Four carried placards which
read "Viet Cong are Ob
scene," "What War in Viet
Nam," "Join the Dodge Re
bellion" and "Come to Vei
shea in '66." A fifth student,
wearing a white sheet and
sanaais, carried a sign read
ing "Jesus will save us in
Viet Nam" while another stu
dent carried a stick with no
placard.
During a demonstration a
Kansas University student
carrying "a sign bearing an
obscenity" was arrested and
booked on a charge of "gross
public indecency" according
to the University Daily Kan
san. About 400 students and
faculty crowded into the Free
Speech Area Friday night to
hear discussions of U.S. poli
cy in Viet Nam, according to
the Daily Illini of the Univer
sity of Illinois at Urbana-Champr'n.
Approximately 20 of the 25
speakers, limited to five
minu'es each, were opposed
to current U.S. policy in Vlet
Nam. Between speeches folk
singers sang pacifist songs.
According to an article by
United Press International,
500 Boston University students
signed a resolution supporting
President Johnson's policy in
Vict Nam. The resolution was
circulated by leaders of the
university's Young Democrat
and Young Republican clubs
to counter weekend demon
strations against U.S. policy in
Viet Nam.
