FORMER STUDENTS ... Of EI Colegio dc Mcvico
Vicki Weber, Susie Rutter, Jim Woerner and Linda Reed
plan their speeches for the Latin American Stndies Fra
grant. Students To Talk
On Mexican Stay
Spend the year studying at
a Mexican university, visit
ing the natives and speaking
Spanish.
It can be done. Liv ing proof
will be presented Tuesday at
7:30 p.m. in the Nebraska
Union auditorium by students !
who have taken part in the
Latin American Studies Pro
gram. University students who
have studies under the pro
gram at El Colegio de Mexi
co in Mexico City the past
two years will explain re
quirements and procedures to
interested students.
Dr. Roberto Esqoena
Mayo, chairman of the Ro
mance Languages Depart
ment and director of the stu
dy program, said this partic
ular Mexican college is a
"very exclusive type of insti
tution from an economic point
of view."
Susie Rutter, a University
student, attended the school
for a year, from February to
the middle of June and from
July to November two years
ago.
She said the college is di
vided into five centers: lan
guage and linguistics, interna
tional relations, history, eco
nomics and Far Eastern
studies.
Classes meet three times a
week, in addition to a semi
nar, Miss Rutter said. There
are no textbooks. Students
are given a bibliography of
books and must do their own
research.
Emphasizing that the col
lege is very competitive. Miss
Rutter said that a class of
30 may end up being a class
of 14 by the end of the three
year term f stdy for most
regular students.
She said many of the stu
dents were graduate students,
and those in international re
letions, "knew they would go
back to their country to as
sume positions in their gov
ernment." Vicki Weber, who returned
from Mexico this year, said
she found it somewhat diffi
cult to adjust to having all
classes in Spanish. She em
phasized that the studies pro
gram is not limited to Span
ish majors, but that students
should have a good knowledge
of the language.
She noted that often Ameri
can students had to defend
United States policy. If one
does not know about a cer
tain U.S. policy "it can be
very embarrassing," at the
school, she said.

Every year tlie University
is attacked by a mysterious
plague which runs rampent
through all of the students
regardless of sex, a$ or
class ranking.
This strange infection is
many times called "the kiss
ing disease." but is technic
ally infectious mononucleosis
(mono).
We have discovered an
unusually high rate of mono
this fall," commented Dr. K.
D. Rose, chief of medical lab
oratories at the University
Health Center.
A medical-journal report on
mono among Smith College
girls observed that the Ugli
est peaks came in the monthg
following Christmas, spring
and summer vacations.
Colonel Robert J. Boigland,
formerly medical officer at
West Point, has noticed a
increase in tte ailment every
February and August, whlca
is about the time the cadets
get back from their semi
annual vacations.
On the other hand, a num
ber of investigators have
found that mcno occurs all
through the school year at co
ed institutions where dating
is a standard function.
