Tigers, Cowboys Meet
By Jim Pearse
Assistant Sports Editor
Lawrence, Kansas, will be
the scene of an intersectional
battle Saturday as the Ari
zona Wildcats come out of
desert to stalk the Kansas
Jay hawks.
Arizona, who last week up
set WAC foe and conference
favorite Utah, is a team
"come of age." Jim LaRue
i.r brought the Cats into na
tional prominence by sys
tematic building and sched
uling of traditionally rugged
football teams.
Kansas has had a week to
dry off after a 26-7 dousing
at the hands of tough Texas
Tech In a game called after
three quarters. The uncover
ing of junior quarterback Bill
Fenton in the absence of Bob
Skahan should boost the Jay
hawks young and shaky new
offense.
Arizona has already leaped
toward a successful cam
paign and the Jayhawks will
most likely fall victim to tne
Cats thrust.
The opening bell in the Big
Eight conference sounds this
weekend for an important
ball game in Stillwater. Okla
homa. The Cowboys corral will
be the site of the Oklahoma
State-Missouri conflict, an
early season "must" game
for both squads.
Both teams lost their open
ers last week as they were
each involved with teams
selected among the nation's
best elevens Oklahoma State
bowed to the Hogs of Arkan
sas 28-14. Missouri was knock
downed by a driving Ken
tucky defense 7-0.
Neither team mustered a
strong offensive charge in the
openers, and both had gaps
on the defensive side of the
game.
However, that was last
week. This Saturday after
noon Oklahoma State prom
ises to have its defense,
which Arkansas riddled for
over 400 yards, back in the
saddle and ready to do bat
tle with Tiger Quarterback
Gary Lane and his swift
cleate-feet backfield buddies
Charlie Brown, Monroe
Phelps, and Carl Reese.
By the same token, Mis
souri's frontline defenses are
set to stop the best fullback
the conference has to offer.
Walt Garrison, and the Tiger
secondary is poised to chase
down and destroy Poke quar
terback Glenn Baxter's aerial
assaults.

Capable of speeds better than 2,000 mph,
the YF-12A is the hottest aircraft around.
Now Maj. Walter F. Daniel, test pilot for the YF-
answers your questions about the world's fastest
manned airplane and America's Aerospace Team
SLA-.

12A, S
(Maf. Daniet. a test pilot since 1954, is a member
of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots. He
received a BS. degree in Aeronautical Engineering
from the University of Oklahoma. In February
1962, he set world class time-to-climb records in a
T-38 jet trainer.)
b flic YF-12A toe world's fastest manned aircraft?
It certainly is. On May 1 of this year the YF-12A
(formerly known as the A-l 1 ) reclaimed the world
absolute speed record from the USSR. It was
clocked at 2,062 mph over Edwards Air Force Base.
How big is the YF-12A?
The exact dimensions of the YF-12A have not been
released yet But it's approximately 100 feet long,
with about a 50-foot wingspan. That's half again
as big as our present interceptors!
Is tbe Air Force training many men
as pilots these days?
Yes, very definitely. In spite of all you hear about
unmanned vehicles, the human pilot is still very
much in the picture. As a matter of fact, the Air
Force pilot quota is on the increase."
What other kinds of jobs does the Air Force offer?
Since it's one of the world's foremost technological
organizations, the Air Force has plenty of openings
for scientists and engineers. There are also many
challenging and varied administrative-managerial
positions.
What do I have to do to become
an Air Force officer?
Air Force ROTC is the best way to get started as an
Air Force officer. The new two-year Air Force
ROTC program makes this method available to
men who have already completed a year or two of
their college education. For college graduates, if
you did not take advantage of ROTC, you can
still get started through Air Force Officer Training
School (OTS), a three-month course open to both
men and women.
Can I keep up my studies while
I'm in the Air Force?
The Air Force encourages its men and women to
continue their educations. For instance, you may
qualify to study for a graduate degree during off
duty hours, with the Air Force paying a substantial
part of the tuition.
What kind of future do I have in tbe Air Force?
A bright one. As we move further into the Aero
space Age, the Air Force is going to grow even
more important. And you can grow with it!

Nebraska football fans
should be treated to an after
noon of passing tomorrow.
The Nebraska Scarlet takes
on the Air Force Academy
Falcons in an afternoon en
counter at Colorado Springs.
Reports and indications show
that the Falcons aeriel dis
play will be directed by rookie
quarterback Paul Stein who
connected on 11 of 27 for 177
yards last week while the
Falcons were stopped 31-14 by
Wyoming.
The Husker camp has an
nounced that it will go with
a balanced game attack and
use whichever one is the most
effective.
In the only other encounter
between the two schools Air
Force ruined Nebraska's
chances for a perfect season
in 1963 by stopping the Hus
kers 17-13.
In his 1965 season outlook
coach Ben Martin noted that
the Falcon squad experience
level is the lowest it's ever
been. Adding that the experi
ence problem is further com
plicated by the fact that there
are no two-year lettermen.
Martin noted that the squad
nucleus is the few experienced
players that they have and
the Falcons most serious
problem areas are at the end
and center positions.'
Individual standouts for the
Falcons are quarterback Paul
Stein, an excellent scrambler,
who r tted 91 yards rushing
against UCLA last season and

pass last week.
Included in the backfield is
flanker Guy Hogle, runner-receiver
who has the best speed
on the Falcon squad. Quarter
back Sonny Litz is another
backfield standout whose
passing ability could pose a
threat.
In the line the Falcons have
212-pound middle guard Don
Heckert who has been rated
as one of the nation's top de
fensive linemen and sopho
more offensive tackle Allen
Burchett who has been labeled
as one of the Falcon's bright
est prospects in several sea
sons. The Huskers will make the
trip with the starting line-up
virtually intact after last
week's 34-14 victory over
OCU. Kelly Petersen has
gained the starting position at
center and is slated to alter
nate with last week's starter
Duncan Drum.
Frank Solich has been
tabbed as the starting full
back and the defensive unit
will alternate between Carel
Stith and Dick Czap at tackle
and Marv Mueller and Ted
Vactor in the secondary.
The Husker squad came
through last week's encounter
without any serious injuries
and goes into the game with
everyone in sound physical
shape.
Defensive back Larry
Wachholtz has been tabbed as
the team's field-goal special
ist. Wachholtz was four for
four in extra point attempts in
last week's game.
