Defensively, the Cornhusk ers return 10 of 11 members of the unit that led the Big 8 in all categories and ranked No. 2 nationally in total de fense. Top candidates for na tional honors among the hard noses are All Big 8 middle guard Walt Barnes who may return to offensive tackle be cause of his outstanding speed and mobility and tackle John Strohmyer, a defensive giant in the Cotton Bowl. (LB's) Despite the loss of several key players and the prospect of rebuilding the interior of fensive line, the Nebras ka Cornhuskers expect to field another contender for first-di vision Big 8 honors in 1965. Spring practice is slated to open April 2 and conclude on May 8 with the annual intra squad game at Memorial Stadium. Coach Bob Devaney, the winningest coach in the na tion who has gained two straight Big 8 titles and three consecutive Big 8 Coach of the Year crowns, will have 26 let termen back for a run at a third successive champion ship. Chief among six returning offensive unit members are ends Freeman White (6-5, 220) and Tony Jeter (6-3, 225), two, solid candidates for national honors. The two All Big ends can supply the Huskers with possibly the finest split tight wing combo in the land, Other returning offensive veterans will be quarterback Bob Churchich, who took over as a soph when Fred Duda was sidelined and gained Sophomore Back of the Year honors by guiding NU to a 9-1 record, another title and a third straight bowl spot plus leading the Big 8 in passing and setting a Nebras ka record; Fullback Frank Solich, the mighty mite who led the Huskers in rushing d& spite weighing only 162 (with a weigm in his pants); half back Harry (Light Horse) Wil son, who wound up alternat ing with co-captain Bob Hohn and was the outstanding run ner of the Cotton Bowl game with Arkansas; and tackle Graduation gaps created by the departure of 14 seniors, in cluding All America tackle Larry Kramer, All Big 8 halfback Kent McCloughan, All Big 8 center Lyle Sittler, and Hohn will have to be plugged by returning third- teamers and graduates of the unbeaten 1964 Frosh squad. OUTLOOK BY POSITION Ends Offensive Ends Outstand ing pair in Freeman White and Tony Jeter , . . However, depth must be developed and this could be a problem. Defensive Ends Outstanding on one side with Langston Coleman, with two fine vets in Mike Grace and Bill Haug . . . Depth is question mark. Tackles Offense Help must be found here . . . All America Larry Kramer is gone . . . This could be a weak spot .. . Walt Barnes may come off defense to aid. Defense Out standing on one side with John Strohmyer; above average on other side with Dick Czap . . . However, depth is ques tionable after these two. Guards Offense Both 1964 starters are gone, so huge rebuilding job is needed . . . Both sides are wide open . , . Could be serious weak spot. Defense Both linebackers return, so these areas should be ade quate . . . However, depth is needed, particularly if either Mike Kennedy or Bernie Mc Ginn (or both) move to of fense. Center Offense Big hole left by All Big 8 Lyle Sittler . . . Duncan Drum returns along with sev eral squadmen . . . But this position is of prime spring practice concern. Defense Outstanding if Walt Barnes stays at middle guard; post is wide open if he goes to offense. Quarterback Offense Should be in fine shape with Bob Churchich, fred Duda, Wayne Weber and some fine Frosh pros pects. Defense Larry Wach holtz returns, but depth assist ance is mandatory. Halfback Offense Kent McCloughan and Bob Hohn will be missed. but Harry Wilson, Ron Kirk land, Kaye Carstens will give Huskers some top-flight ex perience . . . Squadmen and Frosh could help, too, so it's not a danger spot to date. Defense Depth needed to back up Bill Johnson and Ted Vactor; help imperative if either go offense. Fullback Offense Speed and quick ness abound with Frank So lich, but size lacking . . . Pete mA i . . laiman, a squaa sniitee or Frosh may provide big man size . . . Position should be adequate. Defense Wide open spot, with help neces sary from all sources. Returning Offensive Starters Left end FREEMAN WHITE (6-5, 225) ... All Big . Led NU with 338 vards in pass receptions, just one shy of the all-time record. . . A rugged defensive end he was an Orange Bowl de fensive star as a soph Jeter served as a standout tight end for the 1965 Huskers. . . Senior. Right tackle DENNIS CARLSON (6-2, 235) . . . Pegged as a third-unit left tackle in the opening 1964 game, Carlson was switched to offensive right tackle for the Minnesota game when Coach Devaney installed the two-platoon system and filled ihi; post well . . . Lack of speed and quickness prevents him from being a standout. . . Senior. Quarterback BOB CHURCHICH (5-11, 176) . . . Big 8 Sophomore Back of the Year . . . Broke Dennis Claridge's season passing yardage record with 893 yards on 54 of 102 pitches, despite fact he didn t start play ing regularly until Fred Duda broke his leg in the third game ... Tough, elusive runner, "Light Horse Harry" became an alternate No. 1 right half with co-captain Bobby Hohn during the last half of the season . . . Also served as top right half when Hohn operated from the fullback spot . . . Wilson was the running star of the Cot ton Bowl and also caught a TD pass from Churchich which enabled NU to lead Grantland Rice trophy winner Arkansas until the final minutes of the game . . . No. 4 rusher on the 1964 club with 303 yards and he caught 11 passes for 144 yards. . . Jun ior. Fullback FRANK SOLICH (5-8, 162) . . . He also caught a 45-yard TD pass during NU s fantastic comeback in the last-ditch 26-21 win over Minnesota . . . John improved rapidly as the season pro gressed, so much, in fact, he was dated as a junior by the pros . . . He s big, quick and tough. Middle guard WALT BARNES (6-3, 235) ... All Big 8 . . . Started season as offensive (or No. 1 before platoon switch) right tackle. . . . May return to offensive unit for 1965 ... He has out standing speed and quickness for a big man . . . Tough and rugged . . . Like Stroh myer, Barnes is considered a top candidate for regional and national honors . . . Sen ior. Left linebacker MIKE KENNEDY (5-9, 214). . .Mike under-studied John Kirby as a soph, then came on well to become a fine defensive line backer for the Huskers in 1964 . . . Lack of height is made up by aggressiveness a n fiery desire . . . Senior. Right linebacker BERNIE McGINN (6-0, 211). . .Tough durable and a fierce competi' tor . . . While not a specta cular player, McGinn did fine job for the 1964 Huskers . . . A fine blocker, too, he may shift to offensive guard for 1965 . . . Oldest member of the squad at 26, he spent three years as a seminary stu dent . . . Senior. Right end LANGSTON (TREY) COLEMAN (6-2, 194) ., . After a great soph season as a defensive star for the Huskers, Coleman is an other NU candidate for to honors . . .
