Bashethallers' Vacation:
km Games In Five Days
Four games in five days
marks the beginning of prob
ably the most physically ex
hausting test for Coach Joe
Cipriano's basketballers.
Friday will see the Huskers
take a 3-1 record plus the
taste of a sweet victory over
Michigan to Texas for a game
with the Longhorns. Then the
night finds the team in Lub
bock for a game with Texas
Tech.
Although losing 86-73 to
Oklahoma last Saturday,
Texas hit 44.7 per cent of its
shots. The next night they
took Oklahoma State into an
overtime before succumbing.
The big point-getters in
these two games were Tom
my Helms, a 6-0 guard, and
Paul Oliver who meshed the
cords for 19 against the Soon
ers. The Red Raiders from
Tech are considered to have
a chance for the Southwest
Conference title, and after
their 98-87 win over Wyom
ing (an early season blemish
for the Huskers) it looks as
if they could be tough to beat
on their home court.
Dub Malaise, only 5-11,
tossed in 40 points that
night.

After one day's rest and a
long trip back to the capital
city, the Huskers will have
to be ready for a rugged
squad of Golden Bears from
California.
The Bears sport a 2-1 rec
ord with wins over St. Mary's
and Arizona. Their one loss
came at the hands of San
Francisco (currently ranked
in the No. 3 spot in the na
tion) by a score of 57-55.
After two consecutive
gnmes with California (rumor
has it that if the Huskers win
these two games, the Berke

one would think that the Big
Red would get a rest for the
duration of the vacation.
But the Big Eight tourna

at least two more games

Congratulations
As the football season takes off its cleats for another
year, we find the usual number of post-season bowl games,
all-star geams, and other honors bestowed upon various
individual players. This year the Huskers have placed men
on many of these teams.
AIl-Ameiica Larry Kramer and Bob Hohn have both
been chosen to compete for the North squad in the annual
Senior Bowl game held in Mobile, Ala. on Jan. 9.
Kent McCloughan and Chuck Doepke were recently
honored with positions on the Big Eight scholastic team.
These are only the most recent awards Bob Devaney's
boys have collected, and it remains to be seen after the
Cotton Bowl game just how many awards the Huskers
will harvest.
Speaking of the Senior Bowl, congratulations to them
for breaking precedence and choosing four Negro players
representing both teams. This marks the first time a Ne
gro has played for either team.
My last congrats goes to former sports editor Peggy
Speece who recently resigned. Being one of the few fe
males to ever call the sport shots for the Daily Nebraskan,
she has served for almost two semesters and not missed
anything sportworthy except perhaps a locker room inter
view. The Peg-Board originator will continue a weekly sports
column plus some help when the track season arrives.

Kusker Guard,
Amalbert, Quits
Ray Amalbert, a junior col
lege transfer from New York
City, has withdrawn from
school, basketball coach Joe
Cipriano said Tuesday.
Amalbert checked in h 1 s
basketball gear and told
Cipriano he was withdrawing
from school because of per
sonal reasons.
"We are sorry to see him
leave because he could have
helped the team," the coach
said. "But he felt it was best
for him to leave and we wish
him well."
Amalbert had averaged six
points per game in the first
three Husker contests and
did not see action in Satur
day night's upset win over
Michigan.
Amalbert was a junior col
lege Ail-American and had
been tabbed for a leadership
role by Cipriano early in the
season.

Huskers To Baffle Hogs;
Weapons Being Readied
Sooooooo-eeeeee! Soo oooo-
eeeee! The huge Cornhusker
stalked the wild hog, craftily
imitating its war cry today.
The hog ran into the trap
thinking an Arkansas friend
was near.
Bomb! Went the club as It
crashed into the spindly bone
of the hog's skull. Bomp!
Bomp! And the Razorback
lay dead, its death-sign escap
ing like a quickly detiated bal
loon. Coach Devaney awoke from
his fitful dream and proceed
ed to think about how to plug
up the hole in the middle of
the line. "Let's see, now if I
move Barnes up to the line of
scrimmage and . . ."
Coach Bob Devaney has an
nounced a 50-man Nebraska
traveling squad for the Cot
ton Bowl trip.
The Cornhuskers will leave
Lincoln Dec. 20 for Browns
ville, Tex., where they'll drill
twice a day until the 25th. On
Christmas Day they'll fly to
Dallas, then launch one aday
drills at S.M.U., the 26th.
The remaining members of
the Husker team, other than
the first party, will join the
squad at Dallas later and will
see the game.
Only one member of Nebras
ka's defensive platoon which
will attempt to stall No. 2
ranked Arkansas in the Cot
ton Bowl at Dallas, Tex., Jan.
1, will be lost via graduation.
But while the Husker de
fense in 1965 will have a vet
eran cast, Coach Bob Devaney
win have to replace six offen
sive starters three of t h e m
all Big 8 selections, with tack
le Larry Kramer adding All
America laurels.
Fullback Joe McNulty, cor
ner linebacker on the B 1 a c k
Shirt unit, is the only defender
winding up his carrer in the
Cotton Bowl.

Nebraska's Cornhusk
ers shattered home, and sea
son attendance records during
the 1964 football season.
In five home games, the
Huskers' unofficial attendance
total was 232,384. The previous
five-game record was 179-444
in 1951. The 1964 total, by the
way, was more than the six
game attendance record set in
1963226,036.
Combined home and road
game attendance unofficially
was 448,521. The previous 10
game high was 396,147 set in
1956 when Pete Elliott skip
pered the Scarlets to a 4-6 rec
ord. Nebraska is a cinch to set a
new 11-game attendance rec
ord when the Huskers go
against Arkansas in the Cot
ton Bowl on New Year's Day.
Previous 11-game high is
447,269 and the Huskers al
ready have unofficially played
before 448,521 in 1964. So the
75,000 fans in the Cotton Bowl
will boost the 1964 total attend
ance figure in the vicinity of
523,531.
Nebraska's total attendance
for 10 games in 1963 was 374,-622.
The undefeated Razorbacks
of 1964 set a host of team and
individual records with their
17-0 win over Texas Tech last
Saturday. The most important
obviously was the undefeated
mark itself the first in 55
years and the only 10-0 record
ever recorded by an Arkan
sas team.
The '65 Cotton Bowl game
will be the ninth post-season

contest for the Porkers and

kansas played in the 1933
Dixie Classic (predecessor to
the Cotton Bowl) then rep
resented the SWC in the Cot
ton Bowl games of 1947,1953
and 1961.
Other post-season games in
elude the Dixie Bowl at Bir
mingham, Ala. in 1948; the
1960 Gator Bowl; and the 1962
and 1963 Sugar Bowls. This
will mark the fifth Bowl game
for a Frank Broyles team in
six years.
The 1964 SW title is the
seventh for the Uof A and thsj
fourth undisputed crown.
Broyles has coached four con
ference champions in six
years. Title teams came in
1936 (5-1); 1946 with Rice
(5-1); 1954 (5-1); 1959 with
Texas and TCU (5-1); 1960
(6-1); 1961 with Texas ("61)
and now a 7-0 mark.
The seven-year record of
Frank Broyles at Arkansas
now stands at 53-21 overall
and 34-12 in Southwest Confer
ence play. That's the best ever
by a Razorback coach. He's
"174 at Fayette ville; 16-6 at
Little Rock; and 19-7 in Texas
for regular season games.
Against SWC opponents
only Texas has escaped a win
ing edge. Broyles' Razorback
teams are 7-0 against Texas
Tech and Texas A&M; 6-1
against TCU and SMU; 5-2
against Rice; 4-3 against Bay
lor; and 2-5 (with five close
games) with Texas.
A few special occasion,
marks are worth mentioning.
For i n s t a n c e Razorback
teams under Broyles are 7-0
for Uof A Homecomings; 4-3
for Dad's Day games; 5-2 for
opening games; and 23-2 for
games plaj ed in November.
He's had 16 shutouts with
five of them coming at th
end of 1964 (tying an all-time
Arkansas record
and the most ever in one season).
