Tomorrow it will all end and the decision will be made a decision that many persons think is one of the most crucial of the century as far as choosing a president is concerned. The Daily Nebraskan has made public its tands, and the students, through the mock election, have made public their stand. The important thing now is that the eligible persons take their stand into the voting booth with them and vote tomorrow. This is the democratic tradition, one that too many persons ignore. The Daily Nebraskan urges all to take advantage of this privilege and vote Tuesday. Childish Pranks When Alexander Graham Bell developed the telephone, he had no idea what he was getting everyone into, one can be sure. The latest discovery, not a new discovery but a new fad, Involves tlelng up all the lines on campus and, to the tune of the busy signal, yelJIng nasties at each other. It's a trivial little thing, but It could result in a very traumatic situation if an emergancy should arise and one could not get an out-line or an in-line to another phone. The telephones were put in for a purpose, that of com munication, and not for providing entertainment for a few childish persons who take joy in causing inconvenience for others. Halloween is over now, and with it the juvenile pranks of children are over. One would hope that these childish pranks of college adults will end with them. SUSAN SMITHBERGER - - M T--Tirimrniii Injustice Dear Miss Smithberger, It is with "very deep emotion" and a "deep sense of Injustice" that we write this reply to your editorial in the Daily Nebraskan, dated Oct. 28, 1964, endors ing Barry Goldwater. Be that as it may, we de mand, as students of this University, as interested students of fair play, and as seekers of what is right, that you, Miss Smithberger, insert as soon as is at all possible a statement which will indisputably clarify your endorsement of Barry Goldwater. We demand that your statement makes it indis putably clear that your en dorsement of Barry Gold water is absolutely and with out question "an act of your own volition" and that it re flects your personal views. And that this endorsement Is not in any way nor have you in any way been dele gated the authority to speak for the attitudes, opinions, or conclusions of the Stu dent Body of the University of Nebraska or its Newspa- Kr as a representative of at body. Thomas E. James Dean Lauritzen Phil White Bruce Craitf Dear Sirst The function of an editor is to speak to the students about the issues, not to speak for them and reflect only their present beliefs. Editor Not Fascist Barry Goldwater is now being described as a Fas cist. I would like to point out that a Fascist works constantly for more power in the Federal government. If there is anything that Bar ry Goldwater is against, it's a more powerful Federal government. The "Liberals" are also accusing the Sen. of want ing to do away with the world and even the universe if he can. Well, I donTt think he can do away Come In And Eat In Our New Dining Room . . . Hosfoi d Awake Nebraska It might surpirse most of you to know that the race for Governor this year is of extreme importance to all Nebraskans. This is the year when you must decide if Nebraska is to move for ward or remain in the same rut it has been in the last four years. The major problem in Nebraska is that it has no leadership in the State House. It is nice to have a governor that is frigidly and shakes everyone's hand. But Nebraska can no long er afford this lack of effec tive leadership. We have a Governor who opposes a broadened tax base. A Governor that op poses a partisan legisla ture. A Governor that is against state supervision of education. A Governor who does not take a stand on the present credit situation in Nebraska. A Governor who fears to come out for the one vote-one man rul ing of the Court, but rather says he will just enforce the law. The present Governor does not run on his party's platform. His political be liefs differ from the Demo cratic tradition. This seems obvious from his stand on the issues. When the party fails to do their duty and select a high ly qualified candidate for the office of Governor, then the people must rise up and correct this grave mistake. The ultimate responsibility rests with the people. Ne braska must and wants to go forward. It is time to look for new leadership. It is time to Build Nebraska. J. James CHRISTIANO'S State Opinion Who Shoots Dear Editor: Clarence Streit, widely re spected for having devoted all the past twenty-five years to freedom and peace, and for his integrity and fairness throughout, testi fied before the Republican Party Platform Committee in July 1964, that the future of freedom depended in no small degree on the Senator from Arizona, because of his determined stand for Atlantic Union as the pillar of our foreign policy. Clarence Streit further testified that the highly de veloped nations of the At lantic community are per fectly capable of working out common trade and poli tical policies which could bring down the power of Communism without war. Senator Goldwater's ac ceptance speech envisioned the "flowering of an Atlan tic civilization." Can it be that the Americans who have denounced him as an irresponsible nation alist have been shooting from the hip themselves President Johnson's ac ceptance speech pictured a great society apparently limited to Americans on ly. His speech never explicit ly extended this great socie ty beyond the USA. Surely these assessments by Clar ence Streit, whom nobody ever accused of being a war monger, should put to rest accusations as to Senator Goldwater's alleged "isola tionism" and "warmonger ing" tendencies. Isabelle Craig Lincoln Encouraging Dear Editor, I read your editorial in the October 28 issue of the Daily Nebraskan wherein as editor you gave support for Senator Barry Goldwat er for President. I feel it is indeed com plimentary to you to take such a forward and thought ful stand. It is encouraging that a young lady like you stands up against what is called the present "trend" and it is so easy to follow the op posite road. To many people it appears, it is even the profitable road, it seems. This so called "trend" can never be good in the long run. I am surprised with the views and position of some of your friends in the magazine and news paper field. Maybe the very fact your paper The Daily Nebraskan is independent, and exists not for selfish ness, allows you to be free for expression. Harvey A. Neumeister Nebraska City oot From Hip With regard to Mr. Neal's charge that Senator Gold water's image of trigger happiness is based only on statements by Hubert Hum phrey, perhaps we could best look at a Goldwater statement which came out during an interview with Hermann Schreiber of "Der Spiegel" (a West German news magazine). This was on June 30, 1964, and was reprinted in the New York Times of July 11, 1964 Senator Goldwater said, "Now I'll have to admit that I possibly do shoot from the hip. I'll have to admit also that while I'm not the most intelligent man in the world, and a lot of people think I'm quite ig norant, that I've traveled more this world, I've done more things, I've experi enced more things probably than most men of this Con gress. So I've been exposed to problems and I don't have to stop and think in details about them." The Democratic analysis in the closing moments of the campaign attempts to deal with peace and pros perity. The Democrats state that we have true peace to a greater extent than ever before. The Democratic party has sidestepped the fact that we are at war now by attempt ing to blame the Eisenhow er administration for lack of action to take care of the crisis in South Viet Nam. In actuality, the U.S., with a Democratic administra tion for the last four years, has caused or pro vided the basis for such headlines as "Red Chinese Advancements in Southeast Asia. The second area of Demo cratic challenge comes in the field of the assertion that we have the best at tainable prosperity. Unfor tunately the Democratic party fails to realize our unemployment rate was 5.1 per cent due to automation, depressed areas over our country and a 15 per cent unemployment rule for young persons in our soci ety. In spite of the fact that billions of dollars have been poured into bills de signed to take care of these problems, the problems still exist. Generally it must be said that Johnson had been so close to such politically corrupt figures that the American public cannot help but wonder to what ex treme LBJ has been using his office for the advance ment of personal gain. The quick shutdown of the Bobby Baker investiga tion tops the list of ques tions regarding President Johnson's integrity. The TFX contract award causes Americans to won der to what extend Lyndon's future and monetary worth are dependent upon favors. The Walter Jenkins case raises the question of out and out carelessness. Even though Jenkins claims he did not divulge top secret material to the Commu nists, the problem still was pointed out: LBJ had not had the FBI run security checks on this man. Why? Further we might ask why Jenkins refused to testify in a subcommittee hearing. Due to the 'failure of the Democratic party and President Johnson to pro vide true peace and pros perity and due to the ques tions of integrity surround ing LBJ, we must accept the undenied integrity of Senator Goldwater. Democratic By Robert thorny Time magazine for Oct. 30 lamented that this politi cal campaign was "going to prove the vital difference between two strong politi cal parties; it has merely shown that one, the G.O.P. is in need of great repair." It is indeed a shame that this campaign could not have been conducted on the basis of issues. Instead, it has centered on an evasion of the issues, from the high est echelons right down to the lowest. The Republican campaign began with criticism of the accomplishments of the last 1 four years, and certainly an opposition party is re quired to do that. But an opposition party is also ob ligated to provide an alter native. This has not hap pened. The Republican candidate has criticized domestic pol icy, yet has not proposed any alternative except the kind of government with drawal which produced and exacerbated the Depression. The Republican candidate has redefined the word "to strengthen," when used in connection with Social Se curity, so that "to strength en" now means to deprive of added funds, to keep from an extension of the benefits, perhaps even to make vol untary. The only alternative pro posed in the realm of for eign policy has come from the Senator's endorsement of German foreign policy, when he stated, "... the only person who is respected is the one who clearly says when necessary that he is determined to go to ex tremes. That is a policy your country (Germany) and all successful countries have followed throughout the past thousand years." The Democratic party, on the other hand, has pre sented both a record oi peace with security, of econ o m I c prosperity, and of progress in the protection of individual freedoms and security, and a program to continue these advances. Faced with overwhelming public support for the status quo, Goldwater, "the man of principles," has aban doned these "principles" to engage in a bitter round of character assassination. He has employed insinu ation and innuendo to ob fuscate the issues with a veil of smear. He has in troduced no proof for any of his charges. He has sim ply become more and more vitriolic in an attempt to discredit the President through sheer power of ver biage. Faced with this situation, the choice facing the voters of America is clear.
