tion of Teacher Education.
The University has long
been accredited by the Ameri
can Association of Colleges
for Teacher Education which,
along with four other national
groups, is represented on the
National Council.

can be proud of the rating be
cause receipt of complete ac
creditation from the agency
on an initial application is un
usual and an indication of ex
ceptional quality.
Chancellor Clifford Hardin
said the new accreditation
"reflects favorably on inter
college cooperation in our
overall teacher education pro
gram. It provides tangible
evidence of academic exce1
lence." The accreditation given by
the National Council is valid
for 10 years in the Universi
ty's elementary, secondary,
advanced professional and
graduate teacher education
al programs.

Sown 95 Years Ago
On Feb. 15, 1869, the Uni
versity of Nebraska was es
tablished as a land-grant col
lege by the state legislature.
Ferguson Hall now stands on
the site of t h e University's
first building. The first curric
ulum was an almost inflexible
course of study. Classics and
mathematics formed the
backbone of the entire work;
however, history, English,
French, German, and the
textbook study of science
were later added,
Nebraska was the first uni
versity west of the Mississippi
to include a graduate college.
By 1895 ft was known as one
of the "big 4" of land-grant
colleges because of its enroll
ment and fine faculty.

Loehlin . . . personalities interact.
He has been experimenting
with computers to find out
how they might be used to
study attitudes, personality
traits and roles of living per
sons. Two model personalities
were "created" by feeding in
formation into a computer's
memory system. Loehlin con
cluded that the interaction of
the personality models re
sembled human reaction pat
terns. "Of course, the model per
sonalities that I create are
very simple and abstract
compared to that of a living
person," he said. "Where we
might deal with only three
or four attitudes, there are
perhaps many hundreds in
volved in an actual life situ
ation. "It may be that we can get
some idea of just how a per
son will react to certain con
ditions before the person has
actually experienced them,"
Loehlin said, discussing long
range goals. Information con

For Women Students
There will be two new fel-
owships for U n i v e r s i-
ty women this year.
The Mortar Board Graduate
Fellowship has been made
available by the Black Mas
que Chapter of Mortar Board.
This fellowship will be
granted to a woman foreign
student who has already com
pleted at least one semester
at the University and will be
enrolled in the Graduate Col
lege during 1964-65. It will
carry a stipend of $300 for
the academic year 1964-65.
Tau Chapter of Phi Delta
Gamma Fraternity will award
a $100 fellowship to a worthy
graduate woman student dur
ing 1964-65. A high scholastic
standing will be the main
consideration.

Receipt of a $52,800 grant
has opened the way for a
substantial expansion t n 1 s
fall of the University of Ne
braska's training of educa
tional specialists to serve the
mentally retarded.
Dr. Marshall S. Hiskey, di
rector of the University's Edu
cational Psychological Clinic,
said the qrant is the first of
a probable series of tnree
from the Division of Handi
capped Children and Youth,
an agency of the federal De
partment of Health, Eauca
iton, and Welfare.
He said the money enables
the University to award six
attractive fellowships for
graduate work toward the
master's degree and five
traineeships to college seniors
majoring in special education.
The fellowships provide
$2,000 stipends, tuition, and a
family living allowance and
the x-aineeships a $1,600 schol
arship applications for whicn
are now bdng received. The
grant also provides some
funds to help strengthen the
University's program in edu
cational psychology.
Increased federal support
for programs training spe
cial teachers, Dr. Hiskey
said, results from emphasis
the late President Kennedy
placed on needs in the area
of mental retardation and
handicaps.
He said the Nebraska area
demand for teachers special
ized in instruction of the men
tally retarded and handi
capped now exceeds the sup
ply by about five to one in
the Nebraska region.
The aim of the new grant,
he said, is to strengthen train
ing programs for teachers at
both the college and local
school levels.
