Poge 4 His Daily Nebraskon Wednesday, December 18, 1963" New Contract Awaits Regents- Nebraska footbaii coach Bob Devaney announced Tuesday afternoon that he has notified University of Miami officials to withdraw his name from consideration as a suc cessor to retiring Andy Gus tavson. The popular Nebraska coach, whose two-year record is 18 wins and only three losses, had visited Miami last weekend but upon his return stressed that he had not re ceived an offer from Miami. Devaney's statement Tues day afternoon: , "I have decided to stay at the University of Nebraska and have withdrawn my name from consideration at the Uni versity of Miami. The job was not offered to me, but I did visit with Miami officials. My wife, my family and I are very happy at Nebraska and we have decided to stay here. We are now turning our full attention toward Auburn and the Orange Bowl game." Devaney's decision was hailed by Nebraska Athletic director Tippy Dye. "We're all extremely happy that Bob Devaney and his wonderful staff have decided to stay here at the University of Nebraska, Dye said. "They have brought our football for tunes to such a position that all of us are tremendously proud." No announcement relating to a new contract, appoint m e n t or financial ar rangements with Devaney was made and there will be none, Dye said, because such announcements must be made by the University B o a r d of Regents following their ac tions and the Regents do not nave a meeting scheduled un til Thursday. NU Rushing Game Doubles In Aiblify To Defeat Foes As the Nebraska Cornhusk ers prepare to meet Auburn in the Orange Bowl, it's in teresting to note that their ability to move the ball long distances and fracture goal line defenses played a key part in NU's 9-1 season. Miami Hosts Track With Grid Teams Husker football players are not the only ones dream ing of post season bowls ... the University of Nebraska track men wDl see action in two bowl track meets. Bowl-bound tracksters include a mile relay team run ning in the Orange Bowl track meet and Ray Stevens who will run the 1500 meters in the Sugar Bowl classic Coach Frank Sevigne announced yesterday. Although the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans has held a track meet in connection with the football game for a number of years, this is the first year that the Orange Bowl spectacular has included a track meet. Coach Sevigne will be sending a mile relay team com posed of senior Gil Gebo from New York City, junior Dick Strand from Minden, and sophomores Dave Crook of Belle vue and Tucker Lillis of Boston, Mass. Gebo and Strand are returnees from last year's indoor championship mile relay team. , Ray Stevens, of North Platte, who capped a fine three year performance by setting a Big Eight record in the outdoor mile last spring, wilj be the Huskers lone entrant in the Sugar Bowl track meet scheduled for New Year's Day. Stevens ran the mile in 4:04.9 at the Outdoor Track Championships in Manhattan, Kansas last May. The Orange Bowl meet will be held New Year's Day at the University of Maimi. Coach Dick Klaas may send his swimmers into Big Eight prominence again this year. Major roadblocks are Kansas and Oklahoma this year after a second place-finish to Okla homa in the conference chase last year. Downtown Lincoln Nebraska powered 81 and 76 yards to score on Missouri, marched 75 against Kansas, hit Oklahoma State with drives of 73 and 70, and rolled 69 y a r d s for a TD against Oklahoma. Perhaps the m o s t impres sive Husker statistic is the fact that 26 of the 37 NU touch downs were scored from in side the opposition's 10-yard line. Nebraska made strides in defensive improvement, to go with a powerful offense, dur ing 1963, and it paid off hand somely for nine wins. The Cornhuskers took the ball away from its opponents a total of 28 times this fall, and they "gained" 585 yards on plays originated by the op position. NU foes yielded 360 yards when their backs were nabbed behind the line of scrimmage. And Nebraska defenders advanced the ball 225 yards with 14 pass inter ceptions. Statistics don't reveal countless "clutch" plays that kept the Huskers among the nation's elite 5th in the UPI poll and 6th in the AP poll, that is. Bruce Smith blasting Mis souri end Jim Waller loose from a two-point conversion attempt pass that would have put the , Tigers in front, 14-13. Dick Callahan's sprint along the goal line to bat down a pass from Larry Shields to Lance Rentzel. All America Bob Brown tearing into the end zone, then leaping high in the air to bat down a sure TD pass to Col orado's Leon Mavity. Other Interesting defensive facts about the Cornhuskers: Opponents m a n a g e d on ly four touchdowns rushing from inside the 10-yard line. No opponent was able to score on the Huskers during the third quarter. Nine of the foes' 15 TDs came in the fourth quarter. Eight of the opposition's 15 touchdowns came on pass plays; opponents passed 193 times and Nebraska turned three of these into NU touch downs. The way opponents scored on Nebraska, by quarters: First Quarter 1-yard Minnesota, Sadek on quarterback sneak. 13 yards Colorado, Symons to Howe pass. Second Quarter 1 Air Force, Czarnote on plunge. 4 Missouri, Boston, fumble recovered in end zone. 7 Kansas State, Corrigan to McFillen pass. 70 Iowa State, Hoover on fake punt. Third Quarter None. Fourth Quarter 4 Oklahoma State, Miller to Williams pass. 7 Okla homa State, Thomas on plunge. 22 Oklahoma, Fletch er to Flynn pass. 23 S o u t h Dakota State, Meyer to Ma ras pass. 27 Oklahoma, Pan nell to S k i d g e 1 pass. 27 Oklahoma, S k i d g e 1 on end run. 38 Air Force, Isaacson to Greenlee pass. 53 Missou ri, Lane to Boston pass. 99 Kansas, Sayers on end run.
