Big 8 Has Reputation To Retain The Big Eight Conference. which last year owned four of the nation's best running teams and four of the coun try's leading ball-carriers, faces a hefty chore in attain ing that lofty peak again this year. A year ago, final national statistics showed Big Eight teams ranking in this fashion in rushing offense: Oklahoma, second; Knsas, fourth; Mis souri, sixtn; ana Nebraska, ninth. National indivdual rankings had Kansas' Gale Sayers third, Joe Don Looney of Oklahoma fifth, Missouri's John Roland seventh, and Iowa State's Dave Hoppman tenth. Only Nebraska, with a tre mendous offensive show of 453 total yards in a 58-7 rout of South Dakota State, main tained that torrid pace in its opener. But the road ahead for the Corn' -rkers is rocky with Minnesota, the nation's top team in rushing defense, next on its schedule. That's only the second of 12 games matching the Big Eight teams against the nation's top de fenders this faD. The Cornhuskers do-every- thing quarterback, pre-dental student Dennis Ciancge, cashed in on two of the top individual performances in the Conference, hitting on four of eight passes for 106 yards to head the passing depart ment and adding another 42 on the ground for a 148-yard total offense, and sophomore quarterback Steve Renko of Kansas hit on eight of 17 passes for the No. 2 spot in throwing. Individual rushing perform ances thrugh the first week of play were bunched with six players totalling 60 yards or more. Ron Barlow, Kansas State sophomore half back, topped the list with 71, followed by teammate Larry Gorrigan, Tom Vaughn of Iowa State, and Sayers with 68 apiece. Another sophomore, issoun s Can Keese, was fifth with 67. Husker junior halfback Bob Hohn, who had been credited with 64 yards by local news sources, was found to have ac cumulated "only" 59 yards in the opener according to Big Eight statistics. Big Eight Drgviing May Surpass Last Season's Record Crowds The Big Eight Conference, which last year contributed to college football's all-time at tendance record of more than 21-million fans with an all time attendance record of its own, appears headed for an other banner season in 1963. A survey of advance foot ball ticket sales by Big Eight institutions show that all eight will equal or surpass last years' sales and three of them Nebraska, Kansas and Mis souri already have estab lished new all-time marks. Last year, Big Eight institu tions recorded a 12.06 per cent increase in home attendance more than any other major athletic conference in draw ing 1,253,936 fans and setting a record per-game average of 32,152, as over-all college football attendance increased for the ninth straight year. The pre-season check of Big Eight institutons shows that Nebraska season sales exceed 15,000, marking a 50 per cent increase over last year's record-breaking advance sale. The Cornhuskers figure five of six home games as sellouts with a total home attendance of 210,000, compared to the record of 199,973 set in 1960. Both Missouri and Kansas, aided by stadium additions of 3,600 and 6,500 seats to boost their capacities to 44,479 and 44,SiO0, respectively, will have more than half of these seats sold before the first kickoff. Missouri anticipates selling 30,000 public and student-faculty season tickets this fall an all-time mark and break ing the all-time home attend ance record of 208,200 set a year ago. Kansas' season sales may reach 26,00016, 000 public and 10,000 student faculty subscriptions be fore the Memorial Stadium dedication game with Syra cuse September 28. This, too, is an all-time record. And Oklahoma, which stood sixth in the nation last year in per-game attendance with 58,803, figures to sell 34,000 plus on a season basis in 1963. OU athletic officials forecast 26,000 of these will go to the general public, marking the ninth straight year for a pub lic season sale over 25,000. Oklahoma State reports a season sale 45 ahead of last year and predicts total at tendance of 289,000 compared to 251,022 in 1962.
