By, Jan Sack A consisten performer and one who gives his all in every meet is the 1963 Outstanding Varsity Athlete as voted by the sports writers of the Daily Nebraskan. For three years Ray "Skip" Stevens has been a main cog in the Husker var sity track team. . His most recent achieve ment is the fastest mile ever run by a Big Eight athlete in conference competition. Skip said his 4:04.9 time "peaked my college track career." Career highlights as seen through Skip's eyes: SOPHOMORE eighth in conference cross country run ingal5:13. Tied for first in 4 mile cross country in Omaha with arch rival Dean White of Doane in 21:06. Placed fourth in indoor conference mile in 4:15.5 which is the first time 'he ran under 4:20. Ran 4:11.3 mile against Barrie Almond of Houston outdors. This was Skip's fastest mile nntil the 4:04.9 last Saturday. JUNIOR Placed fourth in conference cross country meet with a 15:22. Climaxed indoor season with second in the mile in 4:21.4 behind bill Dotson of Kansas at the conference. Aft er the mile came back for third place in 880 with a 1:58.0. "I sure feel good when I can come back in the same meet," he said. Placed fourth in outdoor conference with 4:12.9. Set three records at Cozad meet: two mile relay of Bill Kenny, Clarence Scott, Mike Fleming, and Stevens in 7:54.5; won mile in 4:12.6 for fastest mile of the year; mile relay team of Fleming, Tom Saunders, Ray Knaub and Stevens in 3:21.4. His comment on Coazd, "It was fun." SENIOR Placed second in conference cross country be hind Fleming in 15:01. Went to the NCAA cross country championships in East Lans ing, Mich., and placed 27th in over 100 runners with 20:23.0 time. "This was the first time I "''," ' I " k .
