The Huskers are current ly 4-7 in conference play in sixth Dlace while the Buffs are 6-3 in the conference and in third. Colorado is 7-8 overall and the Huskers are 7-10 overall. Head coach Tony Sharpe plans to use a revised lineup this weekend at Boulder. Sharpe changed the lineup In the Iowa State series, mov ing Dale Anderson from third base to shortstop and installing Ernie Bonistall at third. Commented Sharpe, "The change of the lineup in the second game gave our kids some spark. We plan to con tinue using the same lineup as it should help our overall defensive strength and hitting attack." The new combination in the Infield responded to the change by errorless play in the second game of the ISU series compared to the four errors they committed in the opener. Sharpe said that he was well pleased with the Husker hurling efforts of Ron Have kost and Wall against the Cy clones. Hs1 ; Xost pitched real well but gu poor backing and Wall hurled an almost perfect game, according to the Husk er mentor. In the series against the Buffs Sharpe plans to start Wall, now 3-1, in the series opener and may use him at first base in the nightcap to use his hitting (.286) power. Havekost (3-1) will pitch the second game Friday with Keith Sieck (2-1) slated for the Saturday finale. Colorado had a rest last weekend as their series with league-leading Oklahoma was rained out. The Buffs are un beaten in Boulder this year with consecutive series sweeps of Iowa State and Ok lahoma State. Coach Frank Prentup is ex pected to pitch Adrian Mohr (0-3) and George Cattermole (3-2) Friday and Steve Spang- ou I? posh Postal Swimming Oklahoma continued to do minate the Big Eight confer ence in swimming as they took the 1963 Big Eight Fresh man postal meet. The Sooners scored 125 points to outdistance Kansas University who scored 106 points. The Cornhuskers fin ished in third place with 78 points. The Oklahoma crew won 11 of the 15 events to take the title. The Huskers won two events the 100-yard butterfly with Mike Jackson of Omaha tak ing the victory with a time of 1JJ5.2. "The other Husker victory came when the Husker free style relay team swam to a 3:28.1 clocking and a victory. The team was composed of Tom Nickerson, Dave Frank, Ron Gabrielson, and Dave Ol son. The Husk ers now stand 6 and 5 for the season. Dick Woods and Russ Daub, making their first varsity starts of the season, both won easily. Number one man Dick Gibson ran his ' season's" sin gles record to 7 wins and only 3 defeats. Senior Jack Lausterer, may miss this weekend's Nebraska tennis trip to Kansas and Washburn. Lausterer, Husker number three man, is sick in Student Health Center. Due to his absence, Rich Woods, junior letterman from Lincoln, will probably make the Kansas jaunt. Rick Har ley will be moved up to the Tiiimhnr thrpp ennt nnrl .Tpff Wu elevated to number four, behind the top two Dick Gib son and Dave Wohlfarth. Gibson was the Husker bright soot last weekend , as NU evened its season record to 5-5 with wins over Drake and Kansas State and a loss to Iowa State. Gibson, playing in the num ber one spot, won three sin gles matches and combined with Wohlfarth for the three doubles wins. Baseballers Among Big 8 Leaders Three Husker diamond play ers are among the leaders in their field in the Big Eight ac cording to the Big 8 office in Kansas City. NU pitcher Jan Wall is in fourth place in the pitching department behind leader George Cattermole of Colo rado and two Missouri pitch ersJack Stroud and Rich Peterson. Wall has a 2.72 ERA. In the hitting department, Huskers Dave May and Lar ry Bornschlegel are in ninth and 12th positions. Born schlegel has a .380 average ( since dropped below .300) and May had a .368 average (since upped to .378). Bornschlegl has produced 3 RBI's and May has four to his credit. They trail behind Oklahoma, 18-23. Oklahoma leads by virtue of a two title w i n in eluding football and swim ming. The Huskers are hanging in second due to two third place finishes in football and cross country and a second place finish in swimming. Had it not been for a last place fin ish in basketball with a 1-13 conference record and a last place finish in wrestling, the Husker clan could be sitting on top of the heap. As of now it looks like the Husker troops are going to have to hustle to finish in the first division in anything ex cept track. The NU diamond crew is nestled in sixth place in league play with a 4-7 rec ord. The net team and golfers are also down in second divi sion struggling to gain a first division finish. Oklahoma is on its way to another Big Eight title in the diamond race but it has yet to face Missouri, the nation's number one ranked team. Oklahoma has a perfect marker in the league with 9-0 but Mizzu has a 10-1 record, their only loss occuring in the league opener against Okla homa State. The Big Eight baseball standings could be resuffled this weekend as the Sooners take on the Bengal clan at Columbia. Mizzu should take the Sooners for two out of three and regain the confer ence lead. With only three weekends left in conference play every one in the conference must hustle to retain their confer ence positions. But this is the way it looks from the novice desk in the Big Eight baseball finale: Missouri, Oklahoma, Colorado, Oklahoma State, Kansas, NEBRASKA, Iowa State, and Kansas State. Nebraska has never been strong in the spring sports arena and allots little grant-in-aid money to flow into the sports. But the question is, how do the other Big Eight powers like Oklahoma, Missouri, and Kansas support these same events and always manage to pull in the talent necessary to cope a Big Eight title in the so-called minor sports. Do they pull in more money from the alumni or do they take money away from the big sports football, basketball, and track? The Husker bright spot in the spring arena is as always track. The thinclads have yet to lose a team title in either the indoor season or the out door. This is one sport where the Huskers have been strong since the mid-50's. Head coach Frank Sevigne has accomplished a good job in his recruiting program and the result is a consistant track squad year after year. Sevigne has garnered such recruits as Canadian Joe Mul lin'i, Big Eight middle-distance ace and record holder and Jamacian Keith Garner, ace hurdler. Both of these boys ran for their country in the 1960 Olympics. Gardner was also instrumental in bringing broadjumper V i c Brooks to Huskerland. Sevigne 's hustlers won the indoor title this year after a narrow miss a year ago. But they will be hard pressed to win the outdoor meet. The thinclads scored only one point on the field of their 47 in the indoor meet and lack of field specialists will hurt with the addition of the jav elin and the discus throw two events not run in the in door fracas. Albers Elected Captain On Gymnastic Squad Dennis Albers, junior from Hastings, has been elected team captain for the 1963-64 University gymnastics squad, coach Jake Geier announced. Albers was the high point man for the Huskers this past season and scored 10 points at the NCAA meet in Pitts burgh. The two-year letterman worked all events this year and will continue to do so next season as a senior, ac cording to Geier. Albers is a two time Cen tral District all-around cham pion and placed 7th in the NCCA meet. Wv -V,. f tt f .-I 'M'Hmj. f i"" y fr '?''? I i ' v .www y; i m spssd snetfe ' ', '
