Professors Discuss Frosh Honors Plan Nebraska high school prin cipals and guidance counse lors were told 5'esterday after noon that finding the "right" students for the freshman honors courses still needs fur ther refinement at the Uni versity. Professors from English. mathematics, agriculture and history were optimistic about the results of the newly estab lished honors courses for the top entering freshmen. Speaking at the annual Principal-Freshman Confer ence, Dr. Robert Hough of the English department said he fears that the "intellectual pop-off is missing from the honors courses. "And these are the people who provide stimulant for the classes." he said. Dr. Edwin Halfcr of the mathematics department said they are making an extreme effort to find individuals with "that spark of creativity." Dr. Robert KoehJ of history said his department's honors course "has produced a great deal of controversy and inter est among the honors stu dents." Earlier, Lee Chatfield, di rector of the Junior Division, listed these criteria used in selecting the honors-course freshmen: high intellectual capacity, demonstrated "grade getting" ability and inclination, skilled in "test taking"; at least of "informa tion recognition" common to standardized tests, compe tence in the "memorizing" and "feed back" of the typi cal classroom operation and evidence of inde pendent thinking.
