Board Maintains
St. Onge Verdict
By SUE SMTTHBERGER
Nebraskan Staff Writer
The State Normal Board
has "no intention" of back
ing down in the Henry St
Onge case, according to Hen
ry Freed, president
Freed's comment came af
ter disclosure of a confiden
tial American Association of
University Professors
IAUUP) report that the
board two years ago abused
St. Onge's rights by rescind
ing a teaching contract pre
viously given him.
The May II. 1X1. Dailv
Nebraska! said "St. Onge's
crime revolved aromsd the
fact that he bad opened his
back yard t a controversial
speaker.
"The speaker. William Man-
del, was a witness at the
San Francisco hearings of
the House Un-American Ac
tivities Committee a year
ago," it stated.
St. Onge was lured by
Wayne State Teachers Col
lege President William Bran
denburg and was to report
to the faculty in September
of 1561.

denied a campus forum at

S Freed said Monday, "As
i far as we're concerned, our
aecision was made on a sound
basis. We have no intention
of changing our mind under
any kind of pressure."
St. Onge was criticized by
many people for founding the
Thomas Tusser society, the
May 10 Nebraskan says.
Many believed the group a
mysterious, secret movement,
probably entrenched with
Mandelian philosophies, the
article says.
; Others claimed at the time
that SI. Onge had founded
the society as a joke.
II Thomas Tusser was a poet
I in sixteenth centmrv England.
J He wrote a handful of poems j
about husbandry which were'
reportedly not accepted by
his generation. As a result
, be w as snubbed and died in
debtors prison.
St. Onge ran across his
.writings one morning over,
coffee and suggested that the
i morning coffee group be :
, known thereafter as the Tus- -ser
society.
