Spirit, Enthusiasm
-M- I
Mark Track Squad
By JAN SACK
Sports Staff Writer
As the indoor season draws
near, spirit and enthusiasm
ride high among the Nebras
ka trackmen and their
coaches, Frank Sevigne and
Ike Hanscom.
They remember all too well
the Big Eight Indoor Cham
pionship last year when Ne
braska played the brides
maid's role to perennially
powerful Kansas. The Scarlet
lost to the Jayhawks by 1112
of a point.
Coach Sevigne is looking for
ward to a rough conference
this season. He definitely
counts the Huskers as one of
the favorites, but they will
have their work cut out for
them as Colorado, Kansas,
Missouri and Oklahoma hold
similar hopes.
Fleming a Winner
Fleming won the two-mile
indoor race with a clocking
of 9:17.6 and Moore breezed
the high hurdles in :07.4 for
first place and then ran sec
ond in the lows with a:06.9.
Wilke won the lows in : 06.9 1
and grabbed second in t h e
highs behind teammate
Moore.
Sevigne has 31 men on the
varsity team this year. Seven
are seniors, 11 juniors and 13
sophomores. Like last year
the Huskers' biggest strong
hold is in the track events.
Sevigne said Victor Brooks,
Tom Saunders, Harry Krcbs
and Jim Murphy will not be
eliglbe to participate until
second semester. They will
see their first action against
Oklahoma State.
Knaub Back
Senior Ray Knaub will lead
the sprint corps. The Scotts-
bluff speedster has clockings
of :06.2 for the 60-yard dash
Gil Gebo, junior from New
York City, heads the 440 and
600-yard men. George
O'Boyle, Dick Strand and
Jim Murphy, all sophomores,
and Tom Saunders, junior
from Columbus, will strength
en the Cornhuskers.
The middle distance crew
boasts of such strong names
as Ray Stevens, senior
from North Platte; Bill
Kenny, senior from Waterloo,
la.; John Portee, junior from
Newark, N.J. ; senior Clar
ence Scott from New York
City and Jim Wendt, soph
omore from Kenosha, Wis.
Stevens' best 880 time last
year at l.:54.7 puts him in a
favorable position.
Two of the top hurdlers in
the Big Eight bolster the Ne
braska title hcpes. Moore will
receive plenty of support
from Fred Wilke of Omaha
who placed in both hurdle
events in the conference last
year.
Wilke leading the high
jumpers has cleared the bar
at 6-4. Sophomores Jack
Cramer, Ken Cook, Sam Sam
yelson and Harry Krebs and
juniors Juris Jesifers and
Wesley Paulsen will lend sup
port. Jim Pile, a sophomore, and
Jesifers are the Scarlet cin
dermen in the pole vault.
Shot putters include soph
omore Dick Hotze and junior
Roland Johnson.
