when they travel to Manhat

1943 when the Scarlet posted
a 41-32 win under the late

The Wildcats finished sec
ond to Kansas in the holiday
Big Eight tournament in Kan
sas City losing to the Jay
hawks in the fourth overtime.
The 'Cats post a 5-6 season'
mark with many of their set
backs coming from powerful
non-conference foes.
The last Husker win over
K-State was in 1960 when Ne
braska notched a 70-60 upset
over the Wildcats at Lincoln.
The overall series stands at
59 wins for Kansas State
compared to 44 for the Husk
ers. Nebraska will go into the
game fresh from a 75-47 set
back by Colorado Monday
night. This will be the second
Big Eight appearance for the
Huskers and the first for the
Wildcats.

center, proved to be the big
gun against the Falcons as
he hit 18 points, nine of
them in a second half surge
in 12 minutes.
Nebraska will face Suttner,
Willie Murrell, junior college
transfer and Gary Marriott in
the K-State front line. Coach
Tex Winter may start two
Nebraskans, as he did against
Air Force at guards. Al Peith
man of Hebron and Jerry
Johnson of North Platte re
ceived starting nods against
the Falcons.
Coach Jerry Bush will
counter with Ivan Grupe and
Charlie Jones at forwards.
Bill Vincent at center; Earl
Wright and Daryl Petsch,
leading Husker scorer, will
start at guards.
Vincent's 15 points against
Colorado moved the 6-7 Husk
er junior into third place
among Nebraska scorers.
Petsch still holds the reins on
the scoring lead with 176
points in 12 games for a 14.7
average.

Daryl Petsch, 6-5, 210 pound
Husker eager has been select
ed as the Nebraskan 'Star of
the Week' for his efforts in
the Big Eight tournament in
Kansas City during vacation.
The junior letterman from
Marysville, Kansas, ranked
sixth in scoring in the tourney
with 53 points in three games.
Petsch, who is the top Husk
er scorer this year, suffered
a poor evening and team
showing last Monday night as
the Scarlet took a 75-47 drub
bing at the hands of Colorado.
The star forward-guard de
scribed the Kansas City Big
Eight tourney as "good, es
pecially the final game with
which saw Kansas and K-State
battling through four over
times." Eyeing the Big Eight,
Petsch found the teams to be
weaker with the squads show
ing more balance than last
year.
Commenting on his versa
tile role as forward and guard
the Nebraskan 'star' stated,

Petsch felt that Nebraska
should be better than this
year. "We only lose one man
(Ivan Grupe) and we have
some very good freshmen,"
Petsch pointed out.
Petsch earned All-S t a t e
honors at Kansas his senior
year while his team took the
State Class-A championship.
Daryl's best performances
were in the Oklahoma and
Oklahoma State games in
which he scored IS and 24
points, respectively. In the
Ok.-State game Petsch sunk
the winning basket with three
seconds left in the game.
Petsch described Nolan El
lison of Kansas University as
the best player he has faced.

As soon as finals are over the winter sports will
shift into high gear, and it looks like a mediocre season
is ahead, somewhat of a letdown after the fine football
season.
From this corner it looks as though everyone is ex
pecting the rest of the Cornhusker teams to pull up
surges like the gridders did during the last campaign.
But it is not in the offing and everyone should get
behind the other teams as was done during the football
campaign.
The swimming team is Improved with the addition
of sophomores like Keith Lodwig. The mermen have al
ready crossed one hurdle this year by outchurning Iowa,
the first time Husker swimmers have slapped a Big Ten
team.
The wrestling team Is still a year
away as it has some fine freshmen who
will wait in the wings until next year.
The gymnastics team has been hurt
by the loss of Louie Burkel, but soph
Jim Howard may take up some of the
slack.
As seen already this season, the bas
ketball team is headed for a black year
even though the Big Eight race may turn
into a real barnburner.
Colorado appears to be the power
house even though it was knocked off bv
Kansas in the opening round of the tournament, but the
Buffs turned around and slaughtered Jayhawks, 70-53, a
week later.
Kansas State, although having early season trobles,
should grab the second spot but will be harrassed by
a number of teams.
The next three spots will be a dog fight between
Iowa State, Kansas and Oklahoma State.
Nebraska, Oklahoma and Missouri will battle it out
for the last three spots. Missouri has been hurt by in
juries to its best two tall men, and Oklahoma has been
rather inconsistent thus far.
Here is how the Stick figures the final outcome will
