The number two can just
about summarize the Gotam
Bowl activities.
-It took two weeks to get
things straightened out with
Gotham Bowl officials before
the Huskers were even sure
if ttey were going. .
They were wen forced tc
mH in the Lincoln airport
for two hours before XU of
ficials were assured by the
bowl promoters that the $35,
000 was pnt in the bank.
After all the commotion
about the television coverage,
Nebraska fans had a chance
to see the game twice.
Two-Pointer Helps
The two-point conversion
rule saved the Huskers in the
game.
And most important of
all, the Nebraska boys
dropped the Hurricanes by
two points, 3S-34.
The Huskers used a little
different tactics to stop the
1 Miami squad last Saturday in
New York's Yankee Stadium,
which was practically empty.
In previous games the
Huskers have used methodi
cal power in dropping eight
of ten opponents during the
regular season.
But against Miami, Nebras
ka relied on the spectacular
nlav to brine home the Husk
ers' first bowl game victory
and wash fne sour taste ot
the Oklahoma game out of its
mouth.
It wasn't an easy task for
the Huskers as Miami s All
American George Mira com
pleted 24 of 46 passes for
321 yards and 21 first downs
Mira Faker
Mira used his faking abili
ties with perfection. He took
advantage of the slippery
field bv faking to his receiv
er at close range and then
sending him long as MJ s
sneaker-footed Huskers had
trouble keening their footing
Mira was also brilliant in
mixing up his plays as the
Huskers were often fooled on
tran nlavs.
It was still the Huskers
pain, however, as they con
tinually fought an uphill

NU Ahead
Nebraska took the upper
hand to stay in the third
quarter when a Miami drive
stopped at the NU 30 where
the Huskers took over the
ball.
Passes to Willie Ross, Dick
Callahan and Dennis Stuewe
from Claridge moved the ball
within four yards of the end
zone. Steuwe then rammed the
ball down to the one-foot line
before Bill (Thunder) Thorn
ton jumped into the end
zone to close the gap to 27-26,
in favor of Miami.
Claridgt PAT
Claridge ran the ball over
to complete the two-DOint
conversion with only eight
seconds left in the tnird
quarter.
A Mira misfire set up the
winning score for the Husk
ers.
Claridge intercepted a Mira
aerial before Ross bulled his
way to the Miami 21 in two
plays.
Thunder Rambles
Thornton then made one of
his finer runs of the day
when he carried the ball 16
f f'.- . ;-f
yards to Miami's five-yard
line.
Claridge took the ball to the
one on a keeper play before
Ross scored his second
touchdown of the day.
Thornton went in for the
two-pointer to give the Husk
ers the edge, 36-27.
One More
Miami scored one more
touchdown and had another
threat going in the latter
stages of the game, but an
interception by NU's burly
Bob Brown shut the Hurri
canes off with less than a
minute to be played.

Grapplers
Win Dual
Nebraska matmen ran up a
convincing 26-10 victory over
Colorado School of Mines
last Saturday night following
the basketball game at the
Coliseum.
The Husker grapplers now
stand 1-1 for the season and
will meet Iowa State next
Wednesday at Lincoln.
Mike Tillotson, Steve Wal
enz, and Mike Nissen all suc
cessfully pinned their oppon
ents for five pointers for the
Huskers. Tillotson in the 167
pound class pinned Fack
Schmedemon of Mines in a
creditable time of 3:51.
Husker captain, Nissen
pinned Rich Kern of Mines in
8:56 after first running up a
ten point advantage over his
opponent. Nissen competes in
the 130 pound class.
Walenz opened the match
with a pin over John Thorn
ton of Colorado in the 123
pound class in 5:47.
Husker grappler, Ken Fox,
junior letterman, decisioned
Ed Reish in a convincing 6-2
match in the 177 pound di
vision. Chuck Martin, 137
pound competetor decisioned
Mike McClane, with a 4-2
count.
The only .Colorado points
came in the 147 and Heavy
weight divisions. In the 147
pound class Rick Hickman of
Mines pinned the Huskers
Dick VanSickle in 8:52 and in
the Heavyweight class De
Wayne Schroder of Mines
pinned Nebraska's Bob Zart-
ner in 3.16. I
er sloppily with fumbles and
dropped passes, before the
Huskers drew first blood.
Dave Theisen recovered a
Miami fumble on their own
44.
Ross Scampers
Ross promptly put the Husk
ers in scoring range with a
43-yard scamper before Thorn
ton blasted over for the TD.
The Hurricanes, not to be
denied, came right back with
their first counter of the aft
ernoon when Mira hit Nick
Ryder with a strike to knot
things up, 6-6.
Nebraska failed to move the
ball, and Miami came back
with its second touchdown to
take the lead.
Miami Score
The scoring play came on
a Mira pass to Nick Spinelli,
leading Hurricane receiver,
from 31 yards out. The con
version attempt was no good.
Then came the most excit
ing play of the game. Ross
gathered in the kickoff after
the Miami score and raced
92 yards for the second Husk
er score. Rudy Johnson
made good on a placement
attempt, as the Huskers took
the lead, 13-12.
But once again the Husk
ers could not contain the
Hurricanes as Ryder scored
from the one and Miami com
pleted a two-point conversion
to regain the lead, 20-13.
Some fine Claridge passing
helped the Huskers knot the
halftime score, 20-20.
Nebraska took the ball on
their own 22 where Claridge
nit caiianan at the 39.
Theisen was the recipient
of another Claridge aerial and
ran it down to the Miami 20.
A Stuewe run and a Callahan
reception pnshed the ball
down to the Miami six.
Claridge then hit Mike Eger
with a strike in the end zone
and Johnson added the PAT
to knot the score, 20-20, clos
ing out the first half scoring.
