The Daily Nebraskan Thursday, December 13, 1962 Pass Defense Stressed As Huskers Work Outside Winter Sportsmen In Action Saturday Page 4 Nebraska's Gotham bound gridders had an opportunity to work on pass defense and offense yesterday as the Huskers split up practice time between indoors and out side. The team fought the cold to work on pass defense in preparation to meet Miami and George Mira, AH-Aroeri-can quarterback noted for his fine passing. The Huskers al so worked on their own pass offense. Indoors, the gridders con centrated on their running game and running defense, although the indoors prohibits the team from running full speed. The XU coaches made one change in the Husker defen sive secondary by indicating that Dennis Clandge, All Big Eight signal caller, may be used on defense as well as directing the Scarlet's offen sive attack. Coach Bob Devaney hopes to get outside again today to work on punt returns in their final Lincoln practice. The team and coaches will board a DC-7 Friday morn ing at 8:00 a.m. and arrive at Idlewild airport in New York at approximately 12:30 Eastern Standard Time. The Huskers will then take a bus to Yankee Stadium where they will hold a final short work-out The game is set for 11:00 a.m. EST, unless changed, so the team will be up at 6:30 a.m. for breakfast Saturday and leave from the Manhattan hotel to arrive at Yankee Stadium by 10:00 a.m. The team will remain in New York Saturday and Sun day and return to Lincoln Monday. They will leave New York at about 12:15 EST and are due in Lincoln 2:45 Central Standard Time. Husker Gymnastics Coach Jake Geier has four letter men back from last year's team which won eight and lost two and won the All-College Championships. Chances of equaling that record this year appear dim, Geier feels. Making the trip to Kansas will be: junior letterman Den nis Albers, an all-around per former; sophomore Jim How ard, all-around; sophomore Francis Allen, all - around; sophomore lawrence ( B i f f I P f e i f f , free exercise and tumbling; senior letterman day night against Denver, a team with an 0-4 record for the season. Coach Jerry Bush was pleased with the play of soph omore Larry Bornschlegl, jun ior Bill Vincent and senior Ivan Grupe in the 78-59 vic tory over State College of Iowa Monday. Bornschlegl, a 5-10 guard from Geneva, saw his first varsity action Monday and played so well in the second half that Bush has rewarded him with a starting assign ment against Denver. Both Vincent and Grupe were mentioned by Bush for their rebounding efforts against the Iowans. Vincent led the rebounders with 19. Huskers Petsch and Jones are tied for the team scoring lead with 62 points apiece aft er four games. Grupe is third with 52 and Vincent has 49. In the Saturday night late show. Coach Bob Mancuso's Husker wrestlers will try for a repeat of last year's win over the Colorado School of Mines. Mancuso feels that the Colorado team is similar to the one that the Huskers de feated last year, 16-14. Two XU grapplers are un defeated this season. Steve Walenz, who competes in the 123-pound class, is unbeaten this year, and senior Mike Xissen, a 130-pounder, has not been defeated in his three years of varsity dual compe tition. Mancuso has nominated the following lineup for this Sat urday's meet: 123 Walenz, 130 Xissen, 137 Chuck Martin or Dick Vansickle, 147 Charley Clatterbuck, 157 Jim Wiest or Bruce O'Cal laghan. 167 Mike Tillotson. 177 Kenny Fox. and Heavy weight Bob Zartaer.
