Friday, November 2, 1962 The Daily Nebraskan Page 3 Ex-NU Star Returns for Mizzou Tilt By BOB KRALL Sports Staff Writer Nebraska's Homecoming tnis year means sometning very special to Lt. Colonel H. Sam Francis, an All-Ameri- can fullback for the Scarlet and Cream in 1936. Saturday's game with Mis souri will be the first Corn husker football game Col. Francis has seen since he graduated from the Univer sity in 1937. Because Col. Francis has devoted his life to the serv ice of the country as an offi cer is the United States Army, and because his tours of duty have taken him to foreign lands such as Pana ma, Vietnam, Germany and the Philippines, he has not been in this area during foot ball seasons to be able to sec the Huskers play. Col. Francis arrived in Lin coln yesterday for his person al Homecoming weekend, which includes a reunion with some of the members of the 1936 Huskers team at the Uni versity Club Friday noon. Glad To Be Back' ! am looking forward to this game with boyish excite ment," Col. Francis said, "After you have been away from a place you like for 25 years, you are always glad to be back." "1 want to see Nebraska beat Missouri," said Col. Francis, "'I have never seen a Nebraska team lose to Missouri maybe that is a good sign." 'I want to near those Corn husker songs figain," he said. "'I am anxious to meet Ne . braska Athletic Director Tip py Dye again," Col. Francis said, 'He is doing such a .good job here at Nebraska." "I have not seen him since 1937, when we played for the College All-Stars against the Green Bay Packers in Chica go's Soldier Field, Col. Fran cis said, '"We were the first All-Star team in the series to beat the pros." Sam Francis first came to the University from Oberlin, Kans., beginning his career as a Cornhusker in 1934. Fullback Francis k became AH-American Francis in 1936. Big Six Titlist The '36 Nebraska team was the Big Six Champion with a 7-2 record, losing only to the perennial non-conference pow ers Minnesota and Pitts burgh. This was the last Cornhusker team to be coached by D. X. Bible. ! The one game which nest exemplified Francis value to the team was the Oct. 17, 1!)36 game with Indiana played in Lincoln. Francis had injured an i ankle the week before, and j D. X. Bible did not want to i use him that week against Indiana. The first half Nebraska played without Francis, and at the intermission, Nebraska was losing, 9-0. In the second half Nebras ka played with Francis, and led by" Francis, the Huskers ; .defeated the Hoosiers, 13-9. ; The last time Sam Francis saw the Tigers take the field ! against the Scarlet and; Cream he was a member of , the 1936 Husker team that i beat Missouri, 20-0. Does the return of Col. Sam Francis herald a happy Husker Home- ' .coming?
