'Opposites' Take to Trtrf Saturday
By RICK AKIN
Sports Editor
Saturday's meeting between
North Carolina State and Ne
brasKa, the first time the
Kusfrers have faced the Wolf
packs, at 2 p.m. in Memorial
Stadium, should prove to be
a game of opposites.
The Huskers, ranked ninth
in the country on offense, will
face one of the toughest de
fensive clubs around this
season.
In the Wolfoack's game last
Saturday against Maryland,
North Carolina State held
the Terps to only 92 yards
on the ground before losing,
14-6.
A 78-yard punt return was
the Wolfpack downfall.

North Carolina State has
failed to score in the first
half of any of its three ball
games whereas the first half
was the Huskers' strongest
half, scoring four touchdowns
against Iowa State last week.
"It is like jumping from
the frying pan into the fire,"
proverbed Coach Earle Ed
wards whose squad has
dropped two of its three
games.
"We have let mistakes and
penalties hurt us badly," said
Edwards. "I think our de
fense has held up well, but
one or two lapses have been
extremely painful there."
Edwards and Husker Coach
Bob Devaney are no stran
gers. Both were assistant
coaches at Michigan State in
1953 and had teams that
played against each other in
the last two years.
Yesterday the Huskers
worked on their kicking game
with covering punts and punt
returns being stressed.
They also reviewed goal
line defenses and brushed up
on a few loose ends before
Saturday's encounter.
Listed as the starting and
alternate units, respectively.

Nebraska's cross country
team takes considerable
depth to meet the Drake and
Iowa State harriers at Ames,
la., tomorrow morning at 10
a.m., Coach Frank Sevigne
said.
This will be the first outing
for the Huskers during the
1962 cross country season. All
eight of the boys making the
trip are veterans except for
sophomore Larry Toothaker.
"Because we have more
depth than in the past, the
outlook for this year is fairly
decent," Sevigne predicted.
Bob Lawson, new Iowa
State coach, indicated this
would be a real tough meet.
Mike Fleming, the Big Eight
indoor two mile and outdoor
mile champion at Nebraska,
is one of the finest distance
men in college circles today,
Lawson said.
Making the trip for Nebras
ka are Fleming, Ray "Skip"
Stevens, Stuart Tucker,' John
Portee, Clarence Scott, Toot
haker, Mauro Altizio and Bill
Kenny.
