Twenty-seven thousand fans watched the Huskers warm up for Michigan in a method ical manner to make Coach Bob Devaney's debut in Hus kerland a successful one. Michigan will host the Hus kers next weekend in its first game of the season. Nebraska began to roll the first time it got the ball but was stymied on the South Da kota 37-yard line. Stuewe Helps Drive Dennis Stuewe, senior from Hamburg, Minn., carried the ball 15 yards in two carries to put the ball on the Ne braska 37, and Warren Pow ers, 193-pound fullback, slammed for five. Devaney then moved in the alternate unit which inarched 53 yards for the score. Wil lie Ross started things off with an 18-yard end run. Larry Tomlinson, left end from O'Neill, ended the drive by taking a John Fai man pass on the 5-yard line and dashing into the end zone with 3:20 left in the first quarter. Not Much Done "We didn't do much the first quarter", commented Devaney after the game. "In fact, we were pretty disgust ed with the running game in the first quarter." In the second quarter Ne braska ground out another touchdown, starting from the South Dakota 48-yard line after a peculiar play. The Coyotes, deep in their own territory punted on third down. But the punt was blocked by Larry Donovan, senior left end from Scotts- bluff and South Dakota re covered. The Coyotes then punted to their own 48. Claridge Scores The second drive went 32 yards in seven plays be fore Dennis Claridge faked a pass and ran 16 yards for the score, making the score 12-0 with 8:35 left in the half. The extra point attempt was not good. After two unsuccessful at tempts by South Dakota and one by. Nebraska to get a drive going, the Huskers once again moved down the field for their third touchdown. Doug Tucker, soph quarter back, ran around left end be fore Dave Theisen threw a pass to Kent McCloughan for a 14-yard gain, putting the ball on the South Dakota 19. McCloughan set up the score with a 17-yard scam per to the two. McNulty Scores Joe McNulty, soph fullback, slammed over the right side of the line from the two with 1:20 left in the half. Jim Baffico's extra -point attempt was good, making the score 19-0. Nebraska completely domi nated the first half statistics racking up 16 first downs to South Dakota's none, 244 yards to South Dakota's 32. NU Passes Successfully In passing the Huskers gained 85 yards, completing eight of 14 attempts. South Dakota completed two out of three for seven yards. In rushing Nebraska ran up 159 yards and South Da kota managed only 25. The Coyotes ran only 11 rushing plays the first half. On the second play of the second half the Cornhuskers scored once again. Theisen intercepted a Dick Walsh pass and ran to paydirt from the South Dakota 27-yard line with 13:35 left in the third quarter. Baffico's kick was no good leaving the Huskers way out in front, 25-0. Theisen Improved "Theisen has turned into a real good defensive back and we hope he can stay healthy," said Devaney after the game. McCloughan scored the next time the Huskers got their hands on the ball after Theisen returned a South Da kota punt 16 yards to the Coyote 27. From the 20-yard line Mc Cloughan took a pitchout from Claridge and sprinted down the east sideline into the end zone. Baffico's kick was good, raising the tally to 32-0. And once again the Huskers marched to a score. In eight plays the Cornhuskers marched down to the South Dakota 14-yard line before Faiman with a tackier hang ing on to his arm, rifled a pass to John Vujevich, soph' omore left half from Clair ton, Penn., who was stand' ing all alone in the end zone, Baffico toed another con version and Nebraska 1 e d, 39-0, with about two minutes left in the third quarter. Nebraska finished out the scoring the next two times it was m possession. Paschall Leads Drive On the first of the two drives the Huskers started on their' own 47-yard line. Mc Nulty and Willie Paschall from San Antonio, Tex., led the drive. McNulty slammed his way through the line three times for 21 yards and Paschall whizzed around left end for 23 yards, putting the ball eight yards from paydirt. Tucker finished the drive with a one-yard plunge, and Faiman completed the con version with 12:50 left in the game. The Huskers led, 46-0. 'PaschaU Did Well' "Paschall did real well at times and can be a good foot ball player, although he has a little to learn," said De vaney on Willie's game per formance. Tucker engineered the final drive with some fine passing. He passed to Curtis Bryan, sophomore right end, for 29 yards, and to Noel Martin, seeing his first action in two years, for 14 yards. Martin capped the drive with a one-yard plunge. Fai man made good once again on his extra point attempt, closing the scoring at 53-0. Scott Only Threat Dick Scott, junior left half back who tips the scales at 151 pounds provided about the only offensive threat for the Coyotes. He piled up 73 yards in 16 carries. Jim Huge was carried off on a' stretcher with about six minutes left in the third quarter with a slight concus sion. Trainer George Sullivan said that he thought that Huge would be ready for the Michigan game, and reports from the Student Health Cen ter indicated his condition as being satisfactory yesterday.
