Cornhusker Nine Lose Three Game Set to Kansas
!
By RICK AKIN
Sports Staff Writer
Nebraska's baseball team
received a case of the shivers
last weekend from the
chilly weather and three loss
es at the hands of Kansas.
The Jayhawkers, who fin
ished last in the Bie Eisht
standings last season, licked
the Huskers in doubleheader
triday, 6-4 and 8-6, and in a
single game Saturday after
noon, 3-2.
Saturday afternoon's tilt
was a tough game to lose as
the Huskers tried to return to
their winning ways of the
weekend before at Tulsa.
Kansas started the scoring
In the first when Nebraska
starter Ed Johnson, gave up
a walk to Ken Hensley, Jay-
nawKer ngntiielder. Hensley
moved to second wtien a
sharp grounder bounced off
Husker shortstop John Mor
ris glove.
Hensley Scores
Keith Abercrombie, KU's
leading hitter, brought Hens
ley home with a single.
The Jayhawkers continued
me assault in the second as
Don Miller singled and came
home on winning pitcher Ger
aid Waldschmidt's long
double.
Nebraska started to come
back in the fourth. Steve
Smith, NU's leftfielder,
reached first on an error. Af
ter moving to second on a
wild throw, Smith came home
on first sacker Dick Becher's
single.
Kansas picked up another
run in the sixth' as Dick'
Fanning smashed a double
and came home on Jim Mar
shall's hit.
Smith and Becher combined
once again in the NU sixth
to clse out the scoring.
Smith boomed a triple to
right-center. Becher prompt
ly picked up his second RBI
by bringing Smith home with
a single.
At this point in the activi
ties the Huskers had a defin
ite rally on the move. Don
Purcell followed Becher with
a single putting Becher on
second and Purcell on first
with no one out.
But the alert Jayhawkers
promptly squelched the
threat. Catcher Abercomb-
le picked Keener off at sec
ond. Purcell stole second and
went to third on an error,

HUSKER SHIVERS The Husker baseball team suffered
from the cold weather and even more from a cold series
against Kansas as the J aj hawks surprised the Huskers
with a three game sweep over the weekend.
The decisive blow was Abe-
icrombie's three-run homer.
The bottom half of the sixth
saw the Nebraskans push
home three runs. NU filled
the bases in the seventh but
to no avail as the Huskers
couldn't produce a run.
Wildness plagued starter
Keith Sieck in the second
game. Sieck gave Kansas six
walks and five runs before
being relieved by Ernie Bon
istall in the fourth.
Nebraska went ahead of the
Jayhawks in the fifth as the
Huskers batted around and
scored five runs to take the
lead, 6-5.
Big Runs
But once again the Jay
hawkers came up with the
big runs. Kansas scored two
in the sixth inning and one
in the seventh to win, 8-6.
The series evened the Husk
ers' record at 3-3 (0-3 in the
conference) and put KU at
the head of the Big Eight
with a 3-0 record.
Nebraska heads south for a
three game series with Okla
homa this weekend.
