Ray "Skip" Stevens wins, in 1:56.7. . Winning is nothing new to this North Platte junior who seems to make a habit of it about every time he steps onto the track. For his victor' over B i g Eight Indoor 880 champ Bil ly 4 Stone, Stevens merits the Daily Nebraskan Star of the Week award. According to his doctor, Skip wonld never have ran in the meet against Kansas State and Oklahoma State last Saturday. For two weeks previous Stevens had been plagued by a virus which left him tired. Per haps the semester break where, as Ray said, "all I did was eat and sleep" turned the tide for him. On the Monday before the meet the doctor phoned George Sullivan, physiotherapist, and athletic trainer, and told him that Stevens shouldn't run be cause he'd be too weak. If Stevens does decide to run "be ready to pick him up in a basket," the doctor told Sul livan. Tliese instructions were given for the mile event which he won from John Haraughty in 4:25.8. "What the doctor didn't know was that I'd be run ning the 880, too," Stevens said. Recounting the race Skip said he started in the seventh lane, not considered the best place to begin. Bill Kenny, Stone and Stevens took the lead at the first turn where the other runners simply fell out of contention. After a lap or so Stevens and Stone left Kenny and it was a race between two de termined young men. VOn the last turn I knew he was mine," Stevens said. The slen der blond produced his fa mous kick and took Stone on the inside to finish several yards ahead in 1:56.7. Rocketed to fame for his 4:11.3 outdoor mile against Barrie Almond of Houston last year, Stevens is look ing toward the Big Eight Indoor Championship at Kansas City on March 2-3. There he will match strides with Kansas' Bill Dotson and other top milers in the Con' nce. V tnmediately he will pro be entered in the mile J 880 against Iowa State on Saturday. Then the team travels to Boulder for a dual. At this time there is a chance he may meet 600-yard champ Jim Heath in the 880, but that remains to be seen; All attention is focused on Iowa State, Saturday. After all Skip runs one meet at a time. take tim to remember... I Valentines Tender messages . . . glowing art . . .
