Athletes
Become
'Mayors'

Lexington, Nebraska's ex
panding industrial interest
will temporarily close shop
this Saturdav.
'Almost 20 of 5,550 "Min
utemen" will migrate to Lin
coln for ''Lexington Day" hon
oring eight University ath
letes, including three mem
bers of the varsity football
team, from Lexington.
During the halftone cere
mony, the following eight
Corahusker - Minntemen will
be made honorary mayors of
Lexington.
Mick Tinglehoff, varsity
football, co-captain of the 1961
team; Monte Kiffin, varsity
football; Dallas Dyer, varsity
football; Steve Smith, varsity
baseball and track; Steve
Phister, varsity track; John
Strohmyer, freshman f o o t
ball; Dave Smith, varsity
rifle team; and Dick Peter
son, freshman track. The
three members of the foot
ball team will be represented
by their parents during the
ceremonies.
Tinglehoff, Kiffin and Dyer
each expressed their appre
ciation to Lexington on the
occasion. Tinglehoff stated,
"Lexington has always been
behind its athletes both dur
ing high school and during
their collegiate careers. It's
this kind of strong town spirit
that makes Lexington athletes
hard competitors and hard
workers."
"It's support like this that
. makes you proud of your
home town," added Dyer.
"Knowing that . people at
home are behind not only us,
but the whole team, really
helps spirit," he said Kiffin.
"It instills in one a great feel
ing to have your town gener
ate this sort of ardent mor
ale and enthusiastic com
munity promotion."
Jim Mnrphy, former Hus
ker Big-Eight lineman and
member of the committee
sponsoring the migration,
said,"! hope other towns in
Nebraska will sit up and take
notice this Saturday and show
their support for the Univer
sity through similar events
held in the future."
According to University of
- frcials, "Lexington Day" ist
the first event of its kind in
Nebraska history.

The Nebraska varsity bas
ketball squad will be on ex
hibition before the Husker
Colorado football fray Satur
day. Early arrivals to the grid
contest will have an opportun
ity to watch an intrasquad
scrimmage at 10 a.m. in the
Coliseum, announced Coach
Jerry Bush,
Tom Russell, an Indepen
dence, Kansas senior, and
Rex Swett of Huron S.D. were
lauded by Coach Bush after
early practice sessions. Rus
sell was the top Husker scor
er and rebounder last season.
Bush also gave note to
sophomores, Neil N a n n e n,
Syracuse; Daryi Petsch of
Marysville, Kan., and Chuck
SJadovnik of Omaha. He said
he was pleased with the en
thusiasm of the entire squad.
Nebraska opens its season
Dec. 4 at Wichita. The first
home contest is billed for'
Dec. 7 Southern Methodist.
The varsity will play the
frosh on Nov. 29.
Deadline Today
The registration deadline
for the Union Recreation
Committee's Scotch Doubles
Tournament is S p.m., today.
Trophies will go to the top
two teams in the Sunday
Tourney.
