Nebraska's cross country
team will be striving for their
first victory against Iowa
State and Drake this after
noon. Meet time is scheduled for
3:30 over the three mile hill
and dale course in Pioneers
Park.
The Huskers placed second
to Colorado in a triangular
against the Buffs and Kansas
State at Manhattan last Satur
day. Coach Frank Sevigne plans
to use the same boys this
week as he did last. Topping
the list of harriers will be Ray
Stevens, a junior who finished
first in the triangular at Man
nattan with a 16.56 time.
Also expected to give solid
support are Stuart Tucker and
Mm Lew, both sophomores.
The two finished seventh and
eighth respectively at Man
hattan.
Clarence Scott, Andy Steele,
Bill Kenny, John Portee and
Paul Nielsen will also com
pete for the Huskers.

ty fair," sevigne said.
Drake has entered six boys
in the triangular meet: four
seniors, a junior and a sopho
more. Larry Bess, Len Hutch
inson, Dave Johnson, Jim
Moore, John Raveling and
Duane Thomas will make up
the Bulldog contingent.
Last week the Drake har
riers lost to South Dakota
State 19-44.

The Nebraska-Syracuse clash tomorrow has the bill
ings of a top-notch intersectional battle. Both teams will
average over 210 pounds per man in the line and both have
some breakaway backs.
Both the Huskers and the. Orange have one bad game
under their belt. Nebraska couldn't do a thing against
Arizona in a 14-14 tie two weeks ago and Syracuse was
upset by Maryland 22-21.
Nebraska made a comeback last week as the Huskers
looked real good as they lambasted Kansas State 24-0. The
NU line was so powerful that it simply
swarmed the smaller Wildcat backs under.
K-State's quarterback, Larry Corrigan,
will not play this week against Kentucky
due to injuries suffered In the Nebraska
game.
Syracuse boasts one of the greatest
runners in the country in Ernie Davis, who
made 111 yards In 14 carries against Mary
land. NU will counter with their "Thunder"
and "Lightning" pair, Bill Thornton and
Willie Ross.
Syracuse will be minus their number
one right halfback and an alternate tackle. Nebraska may
be without the services of Bob Brown and will have to find
a punter to replace Archie Cobb.
On paper, Syracuse looks like the winner and the
Orange are the favorites. But this is the big one for Ne
braska and will prove to NU fans whether or not Nebraska
has a good football team. The team is up for this one.'
Strictly on a hunch, let's call it NEBRASKA 21, SYRA
CUSE 20.
Big Eight Games
There are two important conference games in this
week's Big Eight action. Iowa State tangles with long
overdue Kansas and Missouri meets Oklahoma State.
KANSAS 21, IOWA STATE 14-Kansas is overdue and
wants a win. The Cyclones have been lucky to stay unde
feated and will fall this week.
MISSOURI 13, OKLAHOMA STATE 0-Tigers were
slowed last week by Cal but have enough to get by Cow
boys. TEXAS 28, OKLAHOMA 12 Could be closer as this
game is always a hard-fought battle but Longhorns are
loaded this year.
KENTUCKY 17, KANSAS STATE fVEra of K-State up
sets is over. Kansas State will be minus Corrigan and play
ing on the road.
COLORADO 22, MIAMI (FLA.) 16Bufis look like
toughest team in league right now and will win this Friday
night game.

ter the round ball outlook for
1961-62 over last season's
final wlndup Of 11-13. .
The 16-men roster provides
for depth in all position. And,
for, the first time in seven
years, the Huskers shbuld
have a scoring punch in the
middle.
The addition of Buddy Deck
ard, an outstanding junior col
lege guard from Independ
ence, Kansas, should bolster
the Huskers.
Tom Russell, a' 1961' Inde
pendence. Mo., transfer, will
be called on for important as
signments agam this season.
Russell Top Threat
Russell was the Husker's
top offensive and defensive
threat during 1960-61 play. As
a junior, he ended the sea
son with a 300 point total and
latched onto 232 rebounds.
Rex Swett was the number
two scorer with 275.
Sophs Help
The top seven frosh pros
pects of last season are also
bidding for births on the vars
ity. Daryl Petsch and Bill Vin
cent head the list with the
top two scoring averages.
Petsch led toe frosh with
241 points an average of
17.2 per game. And Vincent,
the tallest underclassman on
the roster at 6-7, racked up
215.
The Huskers face a tough
non-conference schedule this
season. Of the eight games,
five are on the road.
The opener is at Wichita
while the Air Force Academy,
Wyoming, California, and
Stanford all host Nebraska
later In the season.
Seventeen other frays are
on tap for the Huskers, aside
from the Big Eight Presea
son Tourney at Kansas City,
December 27-30.

Archie Cobb, Nebraska's
punting specialist, has con
firmed reports that he has
been called to active duty and
Will report to Ft. Leonard
Wood, Mo., Sunday.
Cobb will join the 24th Med
ical Air Ambulance unit, the
Wahoo outfit that reported at
Ft. Leonard Wood for active
duty Tuesday, as a teletype
operator. '
Cobb, junior right tackle,
would have one year of eligi
bility left if he returns to Ne
braska. He will not play
against Syracuse Saturday.
Cobb has punted 10 times
this fall for 345 yards and a
34.5 average. He has also
handled the Husker kickoffs.

Theta Xi, formerly leading
their league by a slim one
game margin, boosted their
lead Wednesday when they
dropped the second place
team, Sigma Alpha Epsilon,
19-6.
After the first Theta Xi
touchdown on an intercepted
pass the Sig Alphs held the
Theta Xis from making a first
down. Theta Xis attempted a
kick only to have it blocked
by Kent Philips.
The Slg Alphs went on to
score ty ing the game 6-6. With
the score tied, however, the
Theta Xis roared back on to
score once more.
With nine plays left in the
game, Theta Xi intercepted
another pass to march down
field for a 19-6 victory.
