Husker "Newness" Throttles NoDaks
Rugged Husker Line Halts Sioux;
Explosive Arizona Next NU Foe
By Dave Wohlfarth
With one down and nine to
go Nebraska's Cornhuskers
will try for their second win
of the season against Arizona
this Saturday.
The Huskers started the
1961 season auspiciously Sat
urday by blanking North Da
kota 33-0 before 22,000 fans,
who witnessed the Memorial
Stadium gridiron clash in a
drizzling rain.
This week the Scarlet and
Cream turn their attention to
the Wildcats of the S o u t h
west, who boast of an ex
plosive backfield. Arizona
won their opener Saturday,
troucing Colorado State 28-6.
Nebraska unveiled every
thing from a new band, new
uniforms and, most important,
a new and potent offense In
the whitewash of the Sioux.
Husker quarterbacks filled
the air with spirals and NU
backs ground out 157 yards
rushing as Coach Bill Jen
nings' new offense made its
debut.
The Huskers passed for 137
vards, completing 10 of 18
aerials. Soph quarterback
Dennis Claridge, starting his
hrst game, and senior signal
caller Ron Meade were the
throwers and ends Dick Mc
Danie) and Jim Huge handled
the receiving end of the new
Husker offensive threat, the
airways.
Perhaps the nit-st outstand
ing thing about the NU per
formance Saturday was the
sturdy defense the Huskers
threw up against the NoDaks.
North Dakota managed only
59 yards total o'fense In the
rout, with most ol that
achieved against the Husker
third and fourth stringers late
in the game.
The Huskers started fast
and never let up against the
undermanned Sioux. Jennings'
team, 46 strong Saturday,
capitalized on several breaks,
turning Sioux disasters into
Husker scores.
Thornton Looks Good
Bill 'Thunder' Thornton, ex
pected to be the big gun in
the NU attack this fall, lived
up to expectations as he
scored two of the Husker
touchdowns, both on five yard
bursts around right end.
The other Nebraska scores,
all line plunges, were made
bv fullback Bill , Comstock,
Meade and Gene Ward.
Comstock got the first score
with 13:40 gone in the game
when he banged over from
two yards out after tackle Al
Fischer recovered a NoDak

nine plays. Meade sneaked in
the end zone from the one,
then kicked his third convers
ion of the day to give NU a
halftime bulge.
Big gainers in this drive,
which was strictly a ground
attack, were Comstock, and
halfbacks Willie Ross and Ber
nie Clay.
Huge, who played an out
standing game for the Hus
kers, set up another score in
the third stanza when he pi
rated No. Dak. quarterback
Bill Glas' pass on the ND 24
and returned it to the 19.
After a three yard gain by
Ross, the 'Thunder' boomed
to paydirt in three plays with
8:50 gone in the third quarter.
The final Husker score
came early in the fourth quar
ter and was sparked by five
strikes which Meade fired to
McDaniel, 6-3, 191-pound end.
Ross added some valuable
ground yardage and fullback
Ward scored with a three
yard plunge through the right
side with 13:50 left In the
game.

sustained drive of the game

ker 38 before they were
forced to punt.
The passing of quarterback
Gene Murphy was the only
bright spot of tne dav for the
Sioux. Murphy completed
three passes in the late drive,
good for 28 yards.
Murphy, Bill Glas, Haber
korn and Dave Walker were
the only offensive threats for
Coach Whitey Helling's Sioux.
North Dakota, which opened
up with a 46-0 victory over
Montana State last week, was
hurt by a lack of depth as
several Sioux linemen were
forced to turn in full-time jobs
against the heavier three and
four deep Husker squad.
For the Huskers, the big
red line, both offensively and
defensively looked powerful.
The first unit Husker line,
averaging 214 pounds per
man, was without the serv
ices of Mick Tingelhoff, senior
tri-captain. Due to an elbow
infection. Tingelhoff didn't
suit up tor the game.
Outstanding for the top NU
forward wall were tackles Bob
Jones and Brown. Both mad
several fine plays defensively
and contributed some key of
fensive blocks.
NU's end corps looked real
good all day and the centers
(George Haney and Ron Mich
ka carried most of the load)
played tough ball.
Leading the second 1 i n
charge were Ed Mitchell, 258
pound tackle, tackle Gary
Toogood and end Don Purcell.
Husker Reserves Tough
Other Husker linemen wlva
made some key stops included
Monte Kiffin, John Kirbf
and Clarence Osentowsid.
Thornton was the leading
Husker rusher picking up 53
yards on 12 carries. Claridge
directed two touchdown drives
and had a fine passing arm,
connecting on three of seven
tosses for 49 yards.
Meade was even more sen
sational through the air lanes
as he hit five of six passes,
all to McDaniel, good for 52
yards.
The 33 points scoied by Ne
braska represented a h ! g h
mark for Jennings, starting
his fifth year as NU head
boss.
The 33 point output was also
the most points scored by a
Husker team since Pete El
liot's 1956 team downed South
Dakota 34-6 in the opener.
It was the largest margin
of victory since the 50-0 win
over Hawaii in 1954.
